How to help dd (8) learn how to tie her shoelaces

As above really , we've tried practising but she just got frustrated as she was struggling to. Her hand eye coordination is not the strongest ( she may have got that from me , as I am hyper mobile and struggled as a child too).

Has anyone got any suggestions as it is getting harder to find her shoes in her size without laces and I'm not sure how she would cope at school (pe) with laces. Thank you for your help

Following. I’ve just bought 8 YO DS some elastic ones with a toggle. His fine motor skills are dire and I cannot deal with laces first thing! We’ll practice in the holidays.

Bibidy · 16/03/2021 17:42

Not sure what they're called but I had sort of a pretend shoe/board with laces on it to practice when I was learning - can you get her something like that?

That way she's not under the pressure of having to actually put her shoes on and get out the door every time she tries, and she can sit and do it on the sofa or whatever without having her dirty shoe on her lap :)

We got ours to start off then add the next action. So make the loop with the RH lace, then I finish. When confident with that make the RH loop and wrap the other lace round, the I finish etc.

My DS struggled with laces. He was shown in a shoe shop to wrap the knot a second time. That holds the knot in place and the bow is then easy. It was a revelation to him and he still does it like this to this day!

whatsthestory123 · 16/03/2021 17:52

yep make a template out of stiff card with laces or my son was left handed and found some youtube videos very good

cornflakegirl · 16/03/2021 18:08

There's a way to tie them that doesn't involve making the loop. I think it's simpler.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 16/03/2021 18:12

DS does it a really quick and easy way. I think it's the way cornflake posted.

Crocidura · 16/03/2021 18:17

Another vote for this easy way - DS couldn't work out how to tie his laces at all, but this saved us all a lot of frustration. He still uses it now in sixth form and has never tied his shoes the conventional way. The video we watched was different though.

Whatamuddleduck · 16/03/2021 18:21

I do the easy way. Form two loops and tie them in a knot. Works fine!
I never learned the other way and no one has ever mentioned it since primary school!

PrettyLittleStars · 16/03/2021 18:24

I still cant tie laces the proper way lol!
I still use the bunny ears method, the two loops. Much easier Grin

Frontgardenhelp · 16/03/2021 18:27

Use 2 different coloured shoe laces.

Thread a shoe with the two colours, start about 3 holes down, feed a colour per side then do the usual cross over bit then they can see the loops they form because of the colours rather than saying you wrap that one you can say you wrap the blue one around the white one etc.

It also means because you are only using one end of the shoe lace you can make it super long and the bow ties easier as you are not limited to making a bow with a short lace.

autumnboys · 16/03/2021 18:30

Ds3 really struggled with this. We used the elastic laces for a bit, which were good.

Now he ties the knot, pushes the end bits (Aglet) into the top lace hole. Then he forms the loops and ties them. He doesn’t have to push the aglet in now. Hope that helps.

Gowherewindandfiremeettogether · 16/03/2021 18:30

Thanks everyone for responding , @Bibidy that's a good suggestion, will have a look at getting one for her. @Whatamuddleduck and @PrettyLittleStars that's the method I've always done too lol and one of the ways I tried to teach her , also showed her a video on YouTube about it, but she just ended up getting upset with herself when she couldn't do it after a few attempts. The practise board is our best bet I think .

Thanks again everyone for taking the time to answer

When I was about that age, I desperately wanted some trainers but my mum said I couldn't have them as I didn't know how to tie laces. I sat down in the middle of M&S, and learnt there and then! Try that! (When the shops open)

KirstenBlest · 16/03/2021 19:32

Hold her hands and guide her as she ties them, or tie yours kneeling next to her as she ties hers.

I was late learning to tie my shoelaces as I couldn't reverse the actions I was seeing. My mum was tying hers standing in front of me and doing the knotting two loops.

I learnt how to eat with chopsticks by a lovely young chinese man who just took my hand and put the chopsticks in them in the right position. Magic.

FireBelliedToad · 16/03/2021 20:02

My oh could try the method where the child does the last step. Once they can do that, they also do the second to last etc until they can do it all by themselves.
Or buy elastic or button laces.

AlwaysLatte · 16/03/2021 20:05

My two boys tie theirs different ways. Y husband taught DS1 and he does it the normal way, as do all of us, but I was struggling to show DS2 this method so I taught him the bunny ears method instead, which you could try.
