I noticed this evening that my dd (2.5) has a bifid uvula. I was taking pics of it and watching the Live Photo on my phone and notice the back of her throat looks like there’s a hole or something!! She’s never been diagnosed with anything or had problems.

Hi OP, I just commented on your OP.

I worked in dental for 7 years until recently. If your seeing the bit I think you are it’s your child’s epiglottis. It’s what separates the airway from the part of the throat that swallow food, to prevent food product getting in their airway.

Everything looks really normal and healthy; the bi-uvula is nothing to worry about either.

Bobkitten · 15/03/2021 20:14

High-rising / visible epiglottis? Generally nothing to worry about and just a normal variation of the paediatric larynx. Best to get it checked by the GP, but hopefully that puts your mind at rest for now?

LifesLittleDeciders · 15/03/2021 20:17

It does look like a hole of you haven’t seen one before as it almost looks like an optical illusion of the throat, especially when you haven’t got a clear view of it like this!
Some people can see their epiglottis and others can’t. It doesn’t mean anything you’ll be glad to know Smile

Looks like a posterior cleft palate. I’d ring your GP or dentist and ask them to take a look. The fact it’s not causing any issues is a good thing - try not to panic.

J333gr · 15/03/2021 20:19

Oh my gosh can’t tell you how relieved I am thank you!! Was panicking so much! Thank you all! Feel a bit silly I had no idea that existed!

Ignore me. I’m probably wrong looking at the other posts. But worth checking with GP or dentist for piece of mind

J333gr · 15/03/2021 20:23

@Bethanemethane I think I will call the gp in the morning anyway and see if it’s something they want to look at. Would put me even more at ease if they did!

Last year I noticed the exact same thing in my 4 year old sons throat...googled it, had a total meltdown after reading some really scary stuff and headed off to the GP.

Luckily he did have the onset of an infection so it wasn’t a waste of time but it turns out it was his epiglottis I could see and a totally normal part of the throat that you generally can’t see as its lower down. He just happens to have one you can see! I totally get how you feel....I did too!! Grin

J333gr · 15/03/2021 20:38

@Crossfitwidow thank god for mumsnet or I don’t think I would have slept tonight! How freaky is it!

@j333gr it’s so weird isn’t it? I took a picture of it and showed my friends. They were equally as freaked out!

bluedillydillys · 15/03/2021 21:22

Glad you're feeling reassured now op. I can see my epiglottis too, it's really strange and I remember being freaked out the first time I saw it! Hasn't caused me any issues Smile

indemMUND · 15/03/2021 21:22

Epiglottis, I had this exact same panic with DD a few years ago. I'd never seen anything like it before, but it's okay!

freezingmarch · 15/03/2021 21:31

I can see a bifid uvula and the epiglottis but I can also see a possible cleft (might just be a trick of the light though).

How does the speech sound? Any nasal regurgitation of food/fluids?

Toddlerteaplease · 15/03/2021 22:38

Definitely worth ruling out a submucos cleft palate. Especially if speech is a bit unclear.

J333gr · 16/03/2021 02:24

She speaks beautifully, we just have the ‘k’ sound instead of the ‘p’ sound which is super cute when she’s talking about muddy puddles!

And never had any nasal regurgitating. But I am going to call the gp in the morning.
