Moving to Woking

We are considering a move to Woking from SW London later this year (me, DH and DS 2). Would be great to hear from anyone who lives in Woking or has moved from London. It's perfect from a travel perspective for us to see family and friends / work etc - so I'm set on the area. Any advice welcome!!

Is New Haw any cheaper for housing?

Short walk to West Byfleet and I think Cheaper Council Tax as Runnymede (always used to be cheaper).

New haw is probably a bit cheaper overall, but there’s lots of price variation around Woking. It’s not great timing with everything being shut, but I’d just advise driving over at the weekend and parking up near the house areas you’re looking at, walking around, having a look round the town centre, driving or walking over to the leisure centre park area (v good kids playground as well as nice grounds to walk around). Also you can park up at Horsell common to have a walk around there - the car park just off the a245 by the six crossroads roundabout is probably the easiest, though it’s pretty busy.
What schools are you looking at?
And yes the train is expensive, but it’s v v convenient and very reliable in general. Dead easy for Clapham junction.

Thanks again all so much!

We've been there a few times to look about? Love the playground by the leisure centre in particular!! I'm glancing tentatively at the Thames Dutton / Sunbury / Hanwell park / Mosley area also. Prices seem similar to Woking, travel & council tax seems less of a cost! How bad will this be for air traffic I've no idea......,,

Hi, just wondering how you got on with the move and if you ended up in Woking? I am currently researching our options in Woking particularly near Brookwood.

There is nothing "soulless" about Woking, just because it doesn't have grade II listed shop fronts and cobbled stone streets, there is a lot of history here. There is a buzzing and thriving supportive community here, which I find was rare in London and surrounding suburbs that we've lived in previously. Plus, it's very multicultural (the most out of any Surrey town).

We moved here 6-months ago and are very happy here! We used to live Walton-on-Thames (wasn't very happy with the area and the schools were terrible. Now this is a town I would describe as soulless!). Before this, we lived in Surbiton and Highgate for several years. I was brought up in central London, in Marylebone, Chelsea and Bayswater, so I've seen my fair share of neighbourhoods. We compared Woking with Guildford, but found Woking to be much nicer (a lot more leafy, surrounded by woodlands etc), better commute, cheaper housing, not as crowded. It ticked every box for us. We live in the "posh" bit just south of the station near the Hockering estate. Woking isn't exactly cheap, but much better value than most Surrey towns. The schools are excellent (state and private) and people are humble and friendly. The town centre is great, there's a cinema, theatre, various independent and chain restaurants, an indoor shopping mall, and now Gails bakery and M&S food hall just opened. We are 10-15 minutes from RSH Wisley Gardens too which is in Wisley, Woking. Heather Farm meadows and outdoor cafe is 5-mins away and great for kids and dogs. Chobham Adventure Farm is 10-mins, wonderful for kids. All these places are in the borough of Woking, and plenty more. I couldn't think of a better place to raise a family...

I actually live in Woking. I would not say it is soulless at all. There is a vibrant artist community. The shopping center has just been revamped. I have many friends in woking and life in any city is what you make of it

I ended up in Farnborough (Hants). Couldn't afford Woking in the end, F'borough isn't the most amazing town but we have a lovely home we couldn't have afforded anywhere else, great local schools and some lovely towns nearby!

I lived there about 20 years ago, been back a few times. I quite liked living there despite the town feeling a bit lacking in character - the town centre (although I do agree with those saying it's quite soulless, and also feels quite built-up now with business premises) has good shops and a great theatre that I still go to from time to time when catching up with friends in the area. And it is super handy for trains to London, as pps have mentioned.

Ooops just seen this is an update to an old thread 😁

Farnborough's handy for driving tests at any rate 😁(assuming they're still held there!)
