What is average age to have children where you live?

I'm in North London and feel younger than average with two children (aged 5 and 1) at age 35.

I'd say an older mum where I live would be someone having their first child over the age of 40.

I was talking to one of my friends from where I grew up (Norfolk) about how tired I am and she said how hard it must be to have a toddler at my age Grin

So what's average where you live?

I was 30 when I had dd & I was the youngest mum in her class, I’d guess average age is 35-40

blowinahoolie · 14/03/2021 20:10

Around 23-26.

Candyfloss99 · 14/03/2021 20:11

Average age 35 - 40 I'd say.

Either 30+ or 19. Not many in mid-late 20s which was the average age when I had my firstborn.

MeribleMelon · 14/03/2021 20:13

Mainly professionals trying to establish a career first round here, so first at 33ish second at 35ish is fairly standard.

Standrewsschool · 14/03/2021 20:14

30+ was late for a firstborn twenty years ago.

Hfjshdhs · 14/03/2021 20:14

When I was having my first at 33 I was told I was young for the area (SW London)

Trinacham · 14/03/2021 20:14

I would say 30ish is the average. I just turned 30 and planning to TTC in the next few months.

ShrikeAttack · 14/03/2021 20:16
  1. I am clearly more middle-class than you all!
ArtemisiaGentle · 14/03/2021 20:16

30-40. I had mine at 28.

Parentpower20 · 14/03/2021 20:16

35-37 for first child, but moved from another area where it’s more like 20-25. I had mine late 20s to early 30s. So in a weird inbetween space it seems.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 14/03/2021 20:17

London- I’m 34 with a 3 year old and a 4 month old- most of my friends haven’t had any children, their siblings and my older sisters friends all think about having children seemingly around 36+
I know you can’t always plan things but the idea of a baby in my 40s fills me with dread!

LittleMachine · 14/03/2021 20:17

I had my first at 25 (second at 27) and was always the youngest mum at baby groups, especially the bfing groups. I'm slightly younger than most parents in my DS' classes. I'm now 35 and they mostly seem to be celebrating their 40th so not a hugely significant difference, although it felt it when I was in my 20s.

LittleMachine · 14/03/2021 20:18

Oh, and I'm in Liverpool.

sqirrelfriends · 14/03/2021 20:18

30+ I was the only under 30 in my NCT class, average age was about 33/34.

Not sure if it's actually the average though, or just the average of people I know.

user2021 · 14/03/2021 20:18

Mid-30s for first child. Central/SW London

ParkheadParadise · 14/03/2021 20:19

About early 20s
I had dd2 at 38 ( a surprise)
Two of dd1's friends had babies at the same time as me. I felt bloody ancient.

Hufflepuffsunite · 14/03/2021 21:01

About 28-30 for the first child. That was the average age of my NCT group and it's true among my friends as well. One of my friends lives in a different city and says the average age there is early 20s - she had her second at 29 and said she felt positively ancient on the postnatal ward! I've felt about average in hospital with mine and had them at 28 and 31.

SendMeHome · 14/03/2021 21:09

18 or 32-ish, I’d say. Nothing in between.

TravelDreamLife · 14/03/2021 21:11

I'm in Australia, in a large regional city, about 100km from state capital. So, not far by our standards.

People here have babies early 20's or you're too old. People don't ccomprehend how I waited until 35 to have my first so I could have career & travel first (started trying at 32). I cop a lot of comments about my age.

Meanwhile, SIL in the capital city had her first at 33, same time as me. Was youngest in her mother's group. 35 the standard, apparently. I'm in the wrong place....

Changemaname1 · 14/03/2021 21:13

I was early 20s and I remember the midwife saying I was very young and most people at my baby groups were 30 plus , I feel like I’d be to old now ( almost mid 30s ) to have more I know I’m not and it’s a perfectly normal age just that I’ve been through it if that makes sense whereas a lot of my friends are only just having babies now at the same age !

LST · 14/03/2021 21:14

Under 25. I was 21 & 23 when I had mine.

sipsmith1 · 14/03/2021 21:16

I was 28 with my first, was a lot younger than a lot of the mums in the various groups even though I didn’t feel young. Most of my friends are nowhere near children still. I felt like most were mid/late 30s (South West for reference!)

optimistic40 · 14/03/2021 21:17

Probably early thirties... I had my first at 30, and though I knew some who had already had children in their twenties etc, I think a couple of years older than me was the average. I had the second one in my late thirties and most new mums of their first I met were a few years younger than I was

Whirlwind14 · 14/03/2021 21:18

Mid thirties a was
I had my first at 35 and second at 38...
