If you have a dc at uni...

How much money are you spending on that per month? Dd will be going next year (hopefully, she likes the look of Bristol). Neither dh nor myself went, I have no idea how to support her through even the application system but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
We have been putting money away for the dc since they were born to help towards things like this but I’m curious as to how much you’re spending a month to cover their time at uni.
Tia, I know I’ll have left out important points here, if you ask I’ll answer, not being deliberately unhelpful it’s just I don’t have the faintest idea of what figures I’m looking at Grin
£500? 1K? More? Less? Literally no idea!

Thanks for asking this @TheChosenTwo , DS is due to start 2022 and I have no idea how much it's going to cost us Shock

Lots of unis give a £2000 per year bursary to students eligible for the full loan, so they obviously feel that students need that money.

I would therefore suggest topping your child up from whatever loan they get to the full loan plus £2k.

Okay so she’ll get the lower amount of maintenance loan based on the calculator posted up thread by a helpful poster. That’s fine.
A couple of questions if someone wouldn’t mind answering?
Would dd get that paid directly to her? Does it get broken down into 3 for each term? If she’s in halls, do they get paid for termly or annually? We can make up the difference using the savings we put aside for her.
I’m
Sure I had more questions, I may come back with some more!

We paid rent and our daughter lived off the minimum maintenance loan. She could have worked but chose to budget and not to.

She was fine. She learned to budget that way and the rent was covered

The maintenance loan is paid in 3 installments. It will be paid directly to your DD. The contract for her halls/private rent will be in her name and paid by her too. She may need to stump up a deposit to secure accommodation before she gets the loan monies though. My DS has always had contracts where he has paid for his accomodation in 3 installments to tie in with the loan payments (both when in halls and his house share which is a private rental through a student accomodation agency) - not sure if this is done everywhere though,

Just to add there is a Higher Education topic under the Education section. You will find lots of useful discussions about going to/ being at Uni on there and lots of people with years of experience (multiple DCs going through Uni) who can answer your questions. You might also find the site The Student Room very useful too.

DS’s uni offered options for paying for halls - annual, termly or spread over 8 months.

Chimoia · 14/03/2021 21:57

There's a website and a Facebook group called WIWIKAU that's also great for information.

Same here.

2 of mine paid termly, one monthly (well, we paid them by direct debit).
