If you were really really rich (or maybe you actually are)...

...would you give some of your money to family?

For example, would you buy your sibling a beautiful house? Would they appreciate it?
Wonder if the rich and famous do?

Yes I'd pay off my parents and sisters mortgages.

RosesAndHellebores · 14/03/2021 19:57

No. We are very, very comfortable. Obviously we would help vis avis health issues but not pleasure or ease issues. The SILs could always go to work..........

BurgundyBells · 14/03/2021 19:58

I’ve decided that if I ever won any seizeable amount I wouldn’t be able to enjoy it unless I shared it

Yes me too.

I could never fully relax and enjoy buying my dream home in cash whilst mine and dh's siblings were still scraping together £50k deposits etc.

Share the wealth and share the joy.

I'd put money aside for DC & give my dad & brother both a nice sum of money & I'd pay off my brothers uni debt. My dad owns his house out right already so I wouldn't offer to buy either of them cars or property.

I have an extremely well off grandparent & he has never gave us anything (not that I expect it, it's his money & I honestly don't care for it at all). But he doesn't seem to know what it's like not to have money like him & assumes we all live like he does 😐 I have been met by confusion when I have mentioned I am saving for something & I once asked to borrow £800 towards a new car & his wife swiftly told me no their having to watch their money incase they need to go into a care home in the future. They then went on a lovely 6 weeks cruise a few weeks later ?! 😂😂

Tigger001 · 14/03/2021 20:09

Yes, I feel lucky, I have a great brother and SIL, so we have helped each other out through the years and would give him a big chunk.
He's not massive on money and material things, he has a great house and everything he wants, with enough cash stashed now as he doesn't really spend, We would give it anyway, my DS would probably end up with it being unspent and inherited 😂😂

My best mate would also be given a life changing sum, I love her like a sister, she would really appreciate it.

We would give my SIL on my DH side as well.

Trunkysbun · 14/03/2021 20:14

Ooh I spend many a pleasant daydream spending a euro millions type win! I'd be like the poster with 32 folk to give a million each to, I'd do exactly the same, that would be my favourite part - I'd do it anonymously too and pretend I was one of the lucky benefactors.

Echobelly · 14/03/2021 20:14

I've been doing some wishful thinking about this, as DH is developing a business idea that could have enough legs to be bought up by a big software firm (I wish! OTOH, it is very technical and unglamorous and that tends to be the kind of stuff that gets somewhere)

I think if he managed to sell it for £££ we'd support our parents who aren't badly off, but are not that well set for retirement. My siblings and I have inherited family money that can pay off our mortgages and are all in nice family homes, so i don't think we'd give them anything. Don't know about BIL's mortgage situation, would probably pay off any mortgage they still have. SIL is much younger so if we had a tonne of money we'd probably help her get set up.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 14/03/2021 20:19

Yes, given a sufficiently large sum, I’d help out my mum & two best friends. Other family members and close friends are comfortable in their own right so we don’t need to do anything there.

We are comfortably off (not euromillions numbers but enough not to worry) and have helped friends and family out in the past with interest free loans or cash gifts, not enough to buy a property but thousands/tens of in some cases. I’ve been lucky enough to not have had any issues with it but I can see how they would arise.

nestlestealswater · 14/03/2021 20:21

I don't think I would. I've been stung a few times with helping family out with money, and I imagine that it would be even more difficult if they knew I had a lot of money. I would definitely give a lot away though, I would love to set up a charity to pay for disability aids for families that can't afford them (everything from sensory toys to bathroom refurbs to special needs buggies).

bakingdemon · 14/03/2021 20:35

Also a euromillions daydreamer! I'd pay off mortgages for our siblings (3 between us), and set up a trust to pay for our kids and their cousins education. Then I'd set up a family account with a super nice travel agent so everyone could have at least one lovely holiday a year on us.

miksis · 14/03/2021 20:38

Yes (although I'd only consider myself to be really really rich if I had an 8+ figure sum). I'd set up a trust to help out family members (mine and DH's parents, siblings and their dc) so it could go towards education, buying property, holidays, training, but could hopefully be protected in a divorce or bankruptcy.

I was a single mum for many years and my parents and siblings always helped me out - not directly financially but generous with their time and sharing food etc. I couldn't enjoy my money happily if I was living it up while their kids were missing out on things. If they were all doing OK in life that would be different, but a small windfall for them would make a massive difference.

I wouldn't give money to more extended family (aunts/cousins) as I'm not close enough to them, and they've also unfairly distributed 'family money' (from our shared grandparents) entirely for their own families in the past.

fallfallfall · 14/03/2021 21:12

I have a few family members who are and have and it’s not turned out well.
One has serious guilt and anguish as a result because they all came back wanting more, expecting more, totally changed the relationship and family dynamics.

TheOriginalMrsBagwell · 14/03/2021 21:29

Not my siblings, but I have an amazing best friend that I would definitely give a wodge of cash to. I'd love for her to be able to pay off the mortgage and have a great holiday and have a lump sum put aside for emergencies, she's ace and has been such a rock for me over the years, don't know what I'd do without her support. If you;re reading this, I love you the other Mrs B!

IdblowJonSnow · 14/03/2021 21:38

If they needed it and I liked them then yes.

My family are all wealthy. I'm the poorest by miles!

If I became rich I'd donate some of it to organisations working with women and girls. Or that's what I hope I would do.

DarcyJack · 14/03/2021 21:54

If I won the money I would give loads away, because there is no way I could justify keeping something that is pure good fortune all to myself. If I had worked hard for it maybe not so much.

Bloodybridget · 14/03/2021 21:58

Say I won several million, I'd give my two nieces, and DP's three DCs, maybe half a million each. I'd try to give the same to my DB, but I can't imagine he'd accept it!

Cowbells · 14/03/2021 22:28

Yes I would. If I won the lottery or had similar windfall, I'd give my sister and brother enough money to not worry about paying off the mortgage and putting their DC through college. I'd give house deposits to my niece and nephews, some money to one of my cousins and of course put plenty aside for DC.
