Fortnite or roblox?

Hi, my just turned 8 year old son has asked if he can spend some of his birthday money on a new game, either roblox or fortnite. He already has mine craft but I have no idea about either of them? Any wise suggestions? He doesn't play online at all yet but I said I'd look into both games before I decide?

Both are free - so he can try both then use his money if he wants additional in-game items?

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 14/03/2021 13:14

No idea about Fortnight but Roblox is free.

Within Roblox there are lots of games to pick from to play. Within the games you can play them for free and have lots of fun without spending anything. If you want you can purchase Robux which enable you to buy additional things within the games, for example, extra items for your character, or bits and bobs for your game (eg if it's a car game, instead of waiting to earn money to upgrade your car, paying in robux means you can buy the car you want straight away). Some items can only be purchased using robux.

I wouldn't buy any robux straight off until my child was familiar with the games, and even then, use your own judgement on how much you are willing to spend.

My 7 (nearly 8) and 10 yo play Roblox. DS1 was the last boy in the class to download it (after discussing with other parents, not children). We haven't had issues with it. My two can both get very engrossed into games and spill into RL behaviour (DS1 has some SNs). It is worth looking up official guidence as the games within Roblox are not officially managed.

I have resisted Fortnite to date (admittedly not under too much pressure) I know that many classmates do play, but my main concern is the pace and addictive nature of it combined with my DCs' personalities.

They rotate through Minecraft, Among Us and Roblox.

Roblox here! Lots of games to choose from. We each have an account and can play together. We've added classmates and cousins but no one we dont know in real life. Usernames not related to real name. DS wanted Robux (money) so when he's done 6 extra jobs around the house he gets us$5 worth.

mediumduboir · 14/03/2021 13:29

My sons are 8 & 9 and would pick Fortnite.

mutleyschuckle · 14/03/2021 13:47

Thank you, I was hoping for some other opinions as his friends either have all the games or none- my gaming limits are super mario & spyro so all knowledge is good!

Fortnite seems violent to me, not gory though but I'm not sure I'd find it appropriate for primary aged children. Maybe I'm alone in that view though as I know loads are playing from in some cases a very young age. My 8yo plays roblox a bit, as far as I can see its not centred around killing other humans 🤷🏼‍♀️

Earlybirdcatches · 14/03/2021 14:46

Roblox. Lots of nice games like Adopt Me. Fortnight just seems to be killing each other.

Insertfunnyname · 14/03/2021 14:50

Fortnite is definitely unsuitable for his age. Doesn’t mean many aren’t playing it but it’s really not appropriate.

EleanorLenor · 14/03/2021 14:51

Roblox
I have never purchased Roblux for them and never will though.

CatBiscuits · 14/03/2021 14:53

Definitely Roblox of the 2 games you mention.

Fortnite is about fighting as killing - my boys are ok playing it for short periods but I do know some kids who's behaviour has really deteriorated- but they do seem to be on it a lot.

Roblox has some popular games like Adopt me which are not violent.

mutleyschuckle · 14/03/2021 15:25

Ok, will more than likely say roblox& not fortnite thanks. I'd heard fortnite was more violent & he's surprisingly sensitive so killing wouldn't go down well. Thanks again 😁

Fortnite all the way, great graphics cool updates all the time ,new things to win, costumes, backpacks, pets, gliders. When the new season starts there’s always a big live event on the map which is really good me and hubby watch it with the kids, and the new seasons bring new weapons, places to go,planes or bikes....gosh cou go on and on.
We do have Roblox but they don’t seem that interested in it.Also I’m sure I read something about characters doing unsavoury things!! I think this only if you’re live though. Can’t quite remember it was recent though.
Also my kids play live only with their friends and it’s been great for them through lockdown cos they keep in touch that way.

YEFUCKINSHIT · 26/03/2021 22:51

Fortnite is a shooting game, but it doesnt have any gore like Call of Duty does, Roblox is a platform that has lots of shooting game that actually have things like blood, I will reccomend Fortnite. Smile

My 10 year old isnt interested in Fortnite, it was cool about 3 years ago when I wouldnt let him have it and now I dont think any of his friends are really interested in it. He plays Roblox with his friends and some other things like Tank simulators on his own.

pe3k · 06/06/2021 09:11

My children all played Roblox first. There are lots of games to choose from such as role plays, tycoons, obbys and fighting just to name a few. My children like Adopt me and the obstacle courses.

Some of the games on there can be a bit violent but I think you can set the age to under 13 so they can't play certain games ( please check this though as I'm not 100% sure)

All the games are free but you can buy Robux for extra items, pets, outfits etc.

Fortnite is a great, free game. The aim is to kill though, and be the last one standing. Can be quite addictive.
You can buy Vbucks but I believe this is just for cosmetics and you can play the full game for free.

olivesnutsandcheeseplease · 06/06/2021 14:12

We had a very bad experience with DSS and Fortnite. So much so that DS8 knows he will never be allowed it at home.

DSS became very addicted, was a nightmare to get off it and his behaviour really deteriorated. I've heard of others this has happened to.

DS8 plays a lot of minecraft and wants Roblox which we are considering

LauraHansen46 · 08/07/2021 21:41

Roblox can be gory and have shooting games in it, but most of the games are not that bad. My Ds1 is not allowed to play Fortnight and neither will Ds2.
