Planning a bedroom - would 40cm from end of bed to wall be too tight?

Thinking about either a loft conversion or above garage extension.
The latter would give us a long but narrow bedroom with no choice but to put bed lengthways across the narrowest sides. There would be lots of room on either side of bed but we would just be facing a wall which would be very close to end of bed.
Would it feel claustrophobic?
Any ideas to make the wall feel less oppresive - mirrors or panelling?

There are a few lovely ideas if you look up long narrow bedrooms. They have the beds at the window which I think gives an illusion of space. I think that always looks nice but could be cold I suppose.

If I have it right, couldn't you turn the bed so the head is at the short end of the room and have a little more room at the side?

I've not had no room at the bottom of the bed before but had to have my bed up against the wall in a small room before on one side and it was fine. All that had to happen was that one person (dh) had to get in and climb over to their side. Or out the bottom of the bed if they needed to get out first and didn't want to climb over me.

What size of bed is it? And for one or two people? Can you draw a diagram?

Some of the ideas that came uo looked really lovely. I think being by the window gave a sense of space. But that depends on the layout of the rest of the room. I personally wouldn't want mirrors at the bottom of the bed.

No one needs to see that first thing in the morning. Grin

This for instance , if my link works

Breathmiller · 13/03/2021 07:30

I may have it totally wrong though

Breathmiller · 13/03/2021 07:31

Hwre is another one.

I like the idea of having a fairly high bed if height allows so you can have drawers underneath.

Breathmiller · 13/03/2021 07:36

I quite like this to look at with a book case on the other side but would it feel impractical to have to climb over the bed to get a book. Looks good though.

I think it would be fine from a claustrophobia point of view. Think of beds in ferries, caravans, holiday lodges etc.

However, if you need to walk round the end of the bed it isn't much clearance. maybe move an existing bed 40cm from a wall and see how easy it is to move around. It was OK for us in our over-garage conversion, but it was only a spare room, not every day use.

TeenMinusTests · 13/03/2021 07:42

The other thing we did in our over-garage extension was keep the ceiling higher as otherwise it is very long and narrow so the extra height helps it feel a bit more spacious.

JMAngel1 · 13/03/2021 08:08

I'm not good at diagrams I'm afraid.
We wouldn't have to climb over the bed and there will be lots of room on both sides of the bed just not at the end.
I like one of the photos you linked @Breathmiller with the dark walls - could make it cosy.
Putting the bed against the window would be the best option for room around all sjdes of the bed but I wouldn't want to block the light,, it may not feel cosy (hear wind and rain more) and we wouldn't have a vjew whilst in bed.
Good idea to move our current bed down to see how we feel about clearance at bottom @TeenMinusTests

This would probably be the amount of room at bottom of bed but not pushed up close to the window - there would be lots of space between bed and window - enough for a bedside table and set of drawers and free standing mirror.

Oh that's good you wouldn't have to climb over.

I think it looks quite nice actually, i don't think it would feel claustrophobic especially when you can see out of the window. I hear you on the bedhead being against the window. Feels like you're missing out on the view.
It's good that the bed doesn't need to be bang up against the window too.

Clymene · 13/03/2021 08:39

Unless you're thin, you'd have to turn sideways to get to the other side of the bed. Depends if you'd find that really annoying or not.

Atalune · 13/03/2021 08:46

Is it a double? I would HATE to have to climb over someone to get in/out of bed.

Atalune · 13/03/2021 08:48

Sorry I have just read again- I think how you describe it would be lovely!

My Dd has her dibble bed length ways along a wall with the window there. It’s a good use of space in her small double bedroom.

WinterStrawbsAreLikeTurnip · 13/03/2021 08:50

My bedroom is like this because I have a superking in a not huge bedroom. It's totally fine :)

JMAngel1 · 13/03/2021 08:52

Yes I'm a skinny minnie - I would definitely take the side of the bed by the window - my 6ft DH would not want to walk by end of bed every day. I would if it means I get to have an ensuite and a dressing room area Grin

MotherOfCrocodiles · 13/03/2021 08:53

Mine is like this. We have a very low bed, makes the room not feel crowded and if we need to pass each other one stands on the bed.

We have a mirror at the end of the bed but actually not sure I'd recommend it as it's a bit in the way when you are squeezing past

JMAngel1 · 13/03/2021 08:54

Yes size of bed is a possibility - we currently have a superking so could downsize it - would have to sell that to DH though!

MotherOfCrocodiles · 13/03/2021 08:54

If you do get a normal height bed make sure it doesn't have any bits to bang your knees on!

Hairsonyourchest · 13/03/2021 08:56

If you had skylights (with electric blinds) that you were facing when lying in bed, would that help to make it less claustrophobic?

Ragwort · 13/03/2021 08:59

I would never consider downsizing from a super king bed .... think how much time you spend in bed, you both need to be comfortable. In fact my DH & I have to sleep separately- one in a super king and the other in a king Grin.

WaterBottle123 · 13/03/2021 09:07

Hi OP

We have 50cm. It meant choosing a bed with a very slim headboard.

DP has the far side and is 6 foot 5, broad shoulders etc. I just asked him to demonstrate how he gets round the bed - he sort of turns 45 degrees.

He says it's 'a bit annoying'.

I won't have the far side as I have to be by door.

Rest of room also small though - only 4m across and we have a king size.

It's not our favourite about the house but it's actually pretty cosy.

TeenMinusTests · 13/03/2021 10:00

Consider putting bumpers on the end feet to protect you when you walk round when half asleep. Pipe insulation might work well.

42andcounting · 14/03/2021 10:57

Boring point, but.... It doesn't give you much room to get the vacuum cleaner round, or change the sheets. It would annoy me, but I'm not the most patient person anyway.

QueenPaw · 14/03/2021 11:02

I have 29cm between bed and radiator, then 36cm between bed and wall

Planning a bedroom - would 40cm from end of bed to wall be too tight?
