I think I've put wrong stamp on card...will it go through ?

I posted a sympathy card today.
I put a first class stamp on it not realising it might be classed as a large letter.
What will happen if it's wrong postage?
I haven't put a returns address on
I'm really worried now as I want them to receive it before the funeral.

When this has happened to me (as a recipient, not a sender), the card wasn't delivered, because not enough postage had been paid. So I had to go to the sorting office to pay to collect it.

Whatwhyhowwherewho · 11/03/2021 17:47

The recipient will get a notification from Royal Mail that there is an item of mail with insufficient postage for them. They will either have to collect it from the sorting office and pay the fee or they can attach stamps to the value of the charge to the notification and post it, they will then receive the card. Last time that happened to me it was over £1.

However, a friend once posted half a dozen Christmas cards without any stamps on, mine was still delivered free of charge. So there may be a small chance it is delivered. 🤞

We've recently had to pay £1.50 to have something redelivered because the sender didn't put a large letter stamp on. We thought it was something important but it was very late birthday cards from my SIL. We were NOT happy.

Whatwhyhowwherewho · 11/03/2021 17:48

It will be £1.50 to pay

goingtotown · 11/03/2021 17:49

It will be delivered second class.

ThePricklySheep · 11/03/2021 17:49

Why do you think it might be large letter?
The limit for first class is 240mm x 165mm and 5mm thick. That’s quite big?

Squirrelblanket · 11/03/2021 17:49

Just to add: we were given a link to pay it online and have it redelivered. Our sorting office didn't want visitors with covid etc

dementedpixie · 11/03/2021 17:51

How big was it?
1st class covers up to 240mm long , 165mm wide and 5mm thick

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 11/03/2021 17:52

My Grandad phoned me last year to tell me he had forgotten to put a stamp on my card so if I got a notice from royal mail that I had to pay the delivery charge to ignore it as it wasn't worth it. The card arrived anyway.

DingoWings · 11/03/2021 17:53

You can post up to A5 size on a regular stamp. An envelope up to A4 size is a large letter. The recipient will get a "fee to pay" card; they pay the fee, online or in stamps, and the item will be delivered within a day or two.

LApprentiSorcier · 11/03/2021 17:54

@goingtotown

It will be delivered second class.
I don't think this is correct. (FWIW there is hardly any difference nowadays between first and second class for letters, although it makes a big difference for parcels).

As pps have said they'd get an invoice for the amount owed plus an admin fee before the card can be delivered.

It would be unusual for a sympathy card to be as big as a large letter, though - it's normally big flamboyant birthday cards with padding and embellishments that fall foul of this.

ashbeebb · 11/03/2021 18:34

Oh can you ..it's deffo not a4 size
It's really thin as well
Hopefully the stamp will be enough

I’m sure you weren’t happy cos of the hassle of getting it redelivered but this does read that you’re annoyed about the £1.50 cost Grin
