Holiday entitlement?

Yetiinspaghetti · 11/03/2021 16:08

Please can someone help me with this - I’m about to take a role that’s not in education for the first time ever so I won’t have the luxury of the holidays.

I would get 26 days a year plus bank holidays if full time but I am actually working 6.5 hours a day, four days a week, so only 26 hours.
How do I work out my pro rata entitlement? Do I only get about 12 days a year? I’m going to struggle with that - how do people manage?

How many hours to the full time staff work each week?

Yetiinspaghetti · 11/03/2021 16:13

I’m wondering if it will be done in days worked - so 4 x 5.2 would give me 20.8 days. I could possibly work the extra overtime somewhere to top up to 21 days.

since you do 4 days a week you will get 4/5ths of the holiday allowance, 25 days including bank holidays. Because you work consistent hours it doesn't matter that you only work 6.5 hours as you only need 6.5 hours to book a day off so it cancels out.

Work it in hours 26/37 of fte allowance (5.2x37) . Each day you take leave you deduct 6.5 hours.

FiveGs · 11/03/2021 16:16

Like other people OP, partner/family/friends/childminders/play dates etc. Bit shit but needs must. Hope you get something sorted.

daisybrown37 · 11/03/2021 16:17

Using the way I work out part time holidays- You should get 21 days plus 6.5 bank holidays.

I work it out a FTE divided by 5 and then times by 4 or you get 135 hours plus 42 hours bank holidays if they work it in hours.(5.2 weeks times by hours worked and 1.6 weeks for bank holidays)

GolfForBrains · 11/03/2021 16:17

Your days are shorter but they are your days. So a day's holiday for you is 6.5 hours and you are paid for that the same amount you would get usually. You get 20.8 days (26/5, x 4) - I would expect them to round that up to 21! - and four fifths of the Bank Holidays each year. Usually that's 8, so 6.4 paid days. To the extent they don't fall on days you would usually work (eg if you don't work Mondays), you'd usually get them added to your general holiday entitlement.

Yetiinspaghetti · 11/03/2021 16:18

I don’t have anyone to help me.
I will have to go back into school possibly if it doesn’t work out but I’m giving it a go. My children are still primary aged.

Or what everyone else said - glad my maths matches Daisy's!

Justforphoto · 11/03/2021 16:19

sorry for some reason miscalculated bank holidays so would be 28 days including bank holidays

Yetiinspaghetti · 11/03/2021 16:21

I think I will have some choice around which day I don’t work in the week. Am I better to work Mondays or not work Mondays - given that bank holidays usually fall on them?

OP posts:
Yetiinspaghetti · 11/03/2021 16:22

Thank you everyone - I just really need at least 20 days I suppose. Then if I’m not working one day a week and I can book one day a week over the holidays I will only need childcare for three days. Hopefully.

You should be entitled to 4/5 of 34 days (26 plus 8). So 27.2 days, but you will than have to use one of these each time a bank holiday falls on one of your working days.

Yes, you should get them in days - a "day" to you is only using 6 hours leave, which matches what you work.

daisybrown37 · 11/03/2021 16:24

If you don’t work the Monday’s then you will have more of the bank holiday allowance to use as leave. If you work Monday’s then you will need to use annual leave to cover some of them.

Yetiinspaghetti · 11/03/2021 16:26

Yes. I’m confused over the bank holidays 😂
I’d need to use a day and a half to cover the bank holidays? Is that right?
If I would usually work them?
I’m considering Friday as the day I’m not in because it tacks on to a long weekend.

Don't work mondays! I work similar hours (6 per day x 4 days) worked out in hours with bank holiday entitlement on top. It works out as an extra week holiday because I get the pro rated bank holiday hours but dont have to take them when the bank holiday falls on a Monday

HettieHelvetica · 11/03/2021 16:31

No, you would need to use one day to cover them. One days leave will count as one of YOUR working days, it doesn't matter the length of day for everyone else.

Yes, having Monday as you regular non working day will reduce the number of leave days you need to reserve for bank holidays.

dementedpixie · 11/03/2021 16:32

A bank holiday for you would deduct 1 day of your entitlement.
Best to have a Monday off so you have more choice on which days you have off. If you work a Monday then some of your holiday entitlement will automatically be used to cover those days off giving you fewer days to choose yourself

NoGoodPunsLeft · 11/03/2021 16:35

I worked it out as

26/37.5 x 195 = 124.8 hours
Bank hols

26/37.5 x 60 = 41.6 hours

166 hours or 25.6 days inc bank hols

Yetiinspaghetti · 11/03/2021 16:35

So I have to take all bank holidays out of my entitlement?
If full time I’d get the bank holidays on top of the 26 days? Or is it just that the bank holidays are also pro rata so I’d have to cover two of them?

OP posts:
viques · 11/03/2021 16:36

Watch out that your new employer doesn’t close down between Christmas and New Year meaning you have to use your holiday days to cover their closure.

dementedpixie · 11/03/2021 16:37

Its 26 + 8 = 34
⅘ of 34 = 27.2 days which can be rounded up but not down

Your day is just shorter than a full timers day.

dementedpixie · 11/03/2021 16:39

Only the bank holidays you would be due to work would come out of your entitlement so if you work Tuesday- Friday none of the Monday Bank holidays will be deducted

You get the same proportion of bank holidays as full time staff

Yetiinspaghetti · 11/03/2021 16:40

Thanks demented. So I will get 27 and a bit days? Possibly with a bit of extra overtime I might get it to 28 days including the bank holidays.

I do want this job! I’m just aware of my situation and want to make sure it’s possible.

They won’t close between Christmas and New Year.

Monday's off will give you more flexibility in when you use your annual leave, as the majority of your bank holiday allowance will be added to your leave allowance.

However, having done various work patterns over the years, I find for a 4 day week having Wednesday off works best. Simply because I find it easier to keep on top of everything if I'm only working 2 days at a time. A day midweek pottering and catching up with housework/life admin means that nothing ever builds up. That said, I have a condition which causes extreme tiredness, so that may be influencing my thoughts. Friday I found to be the worst day, as I felt that I was hanging around waiting for everyone else to finish for the weekend, so the day felt quite wasted.
