Reclaim These Streets - Sat, 6pm Clapham, London +++

So, I'm planning to go to this Reclaim These Streets event on Saturday at 6pm to pay tribute to Sarah Everard and also to get really angry about male violence against women.

Is anyone else planning to go? There's one in Clapham, in London but others seem to be mushrooming up in other places (in London and elsewhere) Check the Twitter feed for your local event, or even organise one yourself.

I just feel like society is so misogynistic right now. There was that depressing survey that almost all women have experienced sexual harassment. Getting together (in a socially distanced way outdoors) seems to be really important. I want everyone to know this shit is not okay.

Just for information a woman was fined 10000 pounds in Manchester last weekend for a support the NHS rally with under 40 people and social distancing.
Various participants fine 200.00

BigGreen · 11/03/2021 15:09

I'm still going.

Understand totally but just making you and any other participants aware.
Andy Burnham the mayor has asked for it to be reconsidered but no updates since then

DianaT1969 · 11/03/2021 15:17

A peer in the House of Lords just suggested that men should have a curfew to be off the streets from 6pm.
It's a great way to open the debate.

ilkleymoorbartat · 11/03/2021 15:19

Yeah exactly if it wasn't the pandemic and all men stayed in on a Saturday night. That would be effective.

BigGreen · 11/03/2021 15:26

Love the curfew idea Smile.

Perhaps those that don't feel comfortabel assembling could take their walk / bit of exercise at 6pm on Saturday? It would be a legal way to still occupy public space and join forces to be visible as women.

Thanks for this. I see there’s one planned in Brighton, so I might go to that one.

ChonkyChook · 11/03/2021 15:32

Aside from the fines, men do like to turn up to these things too.

TheVampiresWife · 11/03/2021 15:45

I came on to see if there were any regional vigils planned - I'll check the Twitter link to see if there's one near me. Thanks OP.

It would be if it wasn't a peer from a party that endorses self ID and doesn't think women should have sex based rights...

Interesting how the BLM marches were allowed to go ahead but the Reclaim The Streets march is being called off. Is that because actually dealing with racism and sexism in a short space of time is just too much for our society?

We have local event and I am really hoping it goes ahead.

VenusClapTrap · 12/03/2021 14:34

Has it been called off? Bugger

SquirmOfEels · 12/03/2021 14:47

It hasn't been called off (yet) as the Met advice against it is being challenged in court today

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-56367031

Really heartening to see how quickly the crowdfunder to cover legal costs exceeded the target.

Many locals who use the Common are likely to be there regardless of whether it is officially going ahead. If you are not local and/or a regular Common user who may well be there at that time anyway, and it is formally cancelled, it's better to stay away. But I hope it doesn't come to that. The Common is massive, so plenty of space for masked people to spread out.

Flowers are already being placed at the bandstand

Londonmummy66 · 12/03/2021 15:25

I'll be going anyway - arranging to walk there with a friend and then taking a stroll around the Common if it is called off.......

SquirmOfEels · 12/03/2021 19:07

Bugger

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-56379248

The organisers have lost the court challenge

It would be unwise to travel to this gathering. Locals might take a different view of how they use the Common

DarlingWithoutYou · 12/03/2021 19:19

What a stupid idea. We're still in the throes of a pandemic. It won't change anything except hundreds could all share the virus.

BigGreen · 12/03/2021 20:52

Bummer. It's still legal to take exercise, so I'll be doing that at 6pm on Sat in order to occupy public space at least.

OP posts:
Sstrongtn · 12/03/2021 20:57

I wouldn’t go, it won’t change a damn thing. Until the legal system believes women and doesn’t victim blame, and until a jury of my peers would actually convict.

Sstrongtn · 12/03/2021 21:00

I’ll add to that, instead of breaking the law (not that I agree with it) and making misogynistic men feel even more entitled to think we are all a bunch of shouty feminists (we are quite bloody rightly), I’d put my cold hard cash into people who are actually fighting for change in meaningful ways. Like the CWJ -

www.centreforwomensjustice.org.uk/

Then plaster your anger and their link to every woman you know.

catinbootsx · 12/03/2021 21:04

Nah. A terrible man did a terrible thing to her. Doesn't make half the population rapists/murderers

Not my dad, my husband or my sons

Couldn’t agree more. The only difference in the ‘rules’ at that stage were that 6 people could legally meet outside whereas now the rule is currently 2. Absolutely no relevance whatsoever to the decision made today - in fact now that so many of the vulnerable have been vaccinated and the organisers of the Reclaim the Streets march pledged to ensure distancing, provision of hand sanitiser etc the reality is that this would have been a far safer demonstration so what is the difference ? Utterly disgusted - way to prove that actually for all the talk women are right at the bottom of society’s pile
