French chic paint for a garden fence

I have a question, if you were one of the many who french chic’ed their garden fence or garden furniture last year, how did it hold up? Is it still looking good or has it not weathered particularly well.

I have an ugly brown garden fence that needs painting this year and I fancy a coloured fence. I’ve assumed painting with fence stains won’t cover the brown, so was contemplating french chic al fresco paint but can’t work out if it will actually hold up to the British weather and still look good after a few winters.

Can't comment on that particular paint but cuprinol fence paint is really good and lasts brilliantly. Lots of shades available

Thanks @Bluesheep8 would it cover the existing dark brown fence stain do you think?

I would have thought so, I've only painted new untreated fences with it but it's got a lot of pigment/depth to it, more than I'd imagined fence paint would have so yes I think it'd cover existing stain.

This is one coat of cuprinol over a brown fence, it's been like this all winter as the weather turned! My frenchic front door still looks perfect after painting last year.

Annie Sloan has a good reputation for lasting outside. Try ringing the shop, they're very helpful!

No I don't work for them, I just love her paint.

I’m still mulling! Looking at Cuprinol shades reviews they're very hit and miss, lots of people saying they wash off.

If I’m finally going to make the effort to paint my fences I want it to last!

Back to contemplating french chic al fresco but I can’t work out how it will hold up to the elements. All posts seem to be immediately finished projects not things that have been done a while

Don't do it!! At least not with french chic. I painted a bench last summer, followed application instructions to a tee. It's now a peeling, flaky mess. Same with the pots I also painted. Also used al fresco indoors on things and I won't be using again. I have read that masonry paint works well, but not tried that yet.

I just want to slap some paint on and have it look good for a couple of years.

Just have no idea what to buy, I can see it being boring brown stain again at this point and I really don’t want that. I fancy some colour.

I used both Cuprinol and frenchic outside last year..:: my fences in Cuprinol natural stone still look perfect.... my frenchic table and chairs have been undercover all winter abs so are ok. My mud kitchen in frenchic is flaking a little but that could be through use. My chalkboard surround and bird box in frenchic perfect. My aunties table and chairs in frenchic has called and peeled really badly and now look awful. I’d stick with Cuprinol. I think they have custom colours from certain retailers so the colour range is much large than you’d think

I’d love to try this — but if you paint a fence, does it leech through onto the neighbour’s side of the fence?

piefacedClique · 20/03/2021 17:08

It shouldn’t do @ThatOtherPoster but I guess that depends on how could fence is constructed...: mine is like this and nothing went through www.woodensupplies.co.uk/p/closeboard-fencing-complete-kit-1-8m-h-x-3-0-w-green/

Thank you, @piefacedClique! I have 3 fences in my garden and they’re all different in construction. I might investigate, and try it on the nicest neighbours’ side first before I brave the others...

I used 2 coats French Chic Al Fresco weatherproof inside/outside Blackjack paint on a large new, very well-sanded and vacuumed wooden trough last year. It is now flaking/peeling everywhere! I have a lot to do to get it off and find another black paint or stain. I am not exactly looking forward to it
