Late twenties & stopped periods?

AnxiousMum2015 · 10/03/2021 19:42

I'm in my late twenties and I've had no period since end of December, my partner and I do not use contraception and rely on the stone ages withdrawal method and hes pretty good at it.

Anyways I've tested every month incase there is a small chance of pregnancy and all negative.
I'm just getting abit worried incase we would like to try for another child in the foreseeable future.

Anyone had anything similar and then their periods returned to normal?.

Book a call with GP nurse I would.

Extreme diets can cause this.

PawPawNoodle · 10/03/2021 19:58

Periods can stop for all sorts of reasons; diets, weight gain/loss, stress, infection, etc.

I didn't have a period for about 18 months but then one day they went back to normal like nothing ever happened.

I have called my gp before they stopped completely as I was always late by a few weeks but never 2 months. I has a scan and bloods and everything was normal.

I don't know if I'm on an extreme diet but I gained weight through lockdowns and since january started to loose it, which would be when I was first late?.

Does anyone know why weight impacts periods? And how do they restore themselves?.

I do have another call with my gp coming up so I will talk to her as well. It's just nice to know other people have been through the same thing xx

I recently had 3 months with no periods. They did blood tests to check thyroid, hormones etc and told me I was borderline PCOS. I admit I have put on weight during lockdown and they suggested I lose weight to help. I haven't lost weight but my periods have started again... only they last for around 2/3 weeks! Praying this is just a blip and once I lose weight everything goes back to normal. We are hoping to start a family very soon and this isn't helping! I did find tracking and documents EVERYTHING helpful when talking to the doctors, if they know you are bang on it and you mean business I find they are more helpful and willing to do tests etc. Sorry I can't be of more help but I feel your pain! It's all I thought about for months

I'm 28 and mine have stopped twice in my life. Once for a few months when I worked abroad (stress!) and once for about a year, after I lost a lot of weight and started running. Both times they just came back again on their own.

hopsalong · 10/03/2021 20:59

This used to happen to me a lot in my 20s. Had all tests known to man, no cause ever found other than borderline low weight (but weight was the same when I was having periods). My suspicion is that it was a form of PCOS. But no elevated androgens, no hirsutism, etc.

I definitely don't think you need worry about your long-term fertility. What are your cycles like when regular? Are they longer than 28 days? After the age of 32, I haven't missed periods and my once-long cycle is now, at 42, every 28 days like clockwork. Apparently this is common with ageing for PCOS sufferers.

Thank you everyone, I really appreciate all of your replies.

I spoke with my gp again today who asked me to wait another 3 weeks. This will (if I do not come on in the mean time) take me to the 3 month no period mark. She has advised that after this time we do repeat bloods and ultrasound.

I think I'm just worrying because it's so unlike me I spent most my adult life dreading aunt flow yet here I am praying for her to come.

The gp did also mention that I could be put on a combined contraceptive to help restore my bodies hormone levels but I do not fair well with hormonal contraceptives so I really want to avoid this if I can.

@AnxiousMum2015 I was also given the option to go on hormone contraception but as we're wanting to start a family soon I decided against it.

Let us know how you get on

AnxiousMum2015 · 12/03/2021 11:41

I don't know if I want to go on hormonal contraceptives either. I'm hoping that my body just goes back to normal.

I have everything crossed for you to, it's so frustrating but its nice to know that there are other women out there who are going through similar things.

I will keep you updated with whatever happens next. Please could you keep me updated too xx

You're not going to believe it,

An hour after I posted my last comment I came on! Hopefully this is the start of getting back to normal Smile

I have not gained or lost weight, but have gone through period stopping and starting and changing over the last 12 months. Normally in line with periods of extreme stress

RacheyCat · 13/03/2021 02:57

My periods stopped for a few months at the beginning of the pandemic while I was struggling to get back to my country of residence. Finally got my period on the second day of me being back in the country. Think it was a combination of low body weight and fear.

I think a lot of people's periods went funny with the lockdowns, etc. Possibly remember seeing something in The Guardian about it last year.
