Job offer - interviewed, offered the next job that came up, but it's been advertised

In the last six months I went for a job and came a very close second. I was verbally offered another job - the next job that came up. The interviewer raved about how great I was.

Anyway, the job was readvertised last week. I wasnt told about it by the company at all. In their interview policy it clearly says they can and do keep people on record and will offer them a suitable job if it arises, without interview within six months.

I have reapplied because it's just basically giving my last application a tweak and sending it back.

However I feel like a right tit because if they did want me for this job, why did none of the staff who interviewed me, think to tell me they they was readvertising it?

I have thrown my pride in the bin and applied but I feel like crap because now I cant shake the feeling that everything that was said before was just a load of BS.

Why do people play these stupid mind games? How does it benefit anyone? How can HR, manager, team lead all forget they offered me the job, or that if that wasnt totally made up, to tell me they was advertising.

I'm so down about it. I feel like I have done something wrong in the last six months but no idea what? I feel like a dumb little kid not getting the game that is playing out

It might not be the 'same' position, but a secondry position with the same job title, iykwim. For example, a case manager. There are several. So they might've filled the original position and a second came up, rather than they readvertised it.

If you were verbally offered a job, then you should speak to someone and clarify if you actually have the job or not. Could they be readvertising for an additional person in a similar role? I don't understand why you didn't find out if they had changed their minds about the job offer and why, before reapplying?

My company always advertise all vacancies even if someone is being internally promoted. Is there a possibility that the person who verbally offered the next role is not there?
Nothing to be lost by applying.

The job that's come up is the job they offered me and was waiting funding for.

I haven't asked because it was advertised last week and I only found about it coming up this week.

I dont see any point saying "hey that's my job surely?" Because everything was verbal. Verbal feedback, verbal offer. There is no come back for me to prove I was offered anything in the first place.

When I do the final submit I will mention that I hope they will consider honouring their original offer to me. But I just feel that it cant be a oversight. No one is that forgetful. Never mind a entire interview panel.

No it's the same manager. They have ultimate say over HR and the team lead. They are still there.

Thing is, even if they do intend to consider me but need to reapply, you would think they would give me some kind of heads up? Ask if I was still interested or still free?

It feels like some kind of massive hint like "oh let's meet up again that was fun" and I'm the idiot that doesnt get the hint after being blocked 😂

If I do get a interview that's going to be awkward at best if the offer is never brought up again or if I get it I might feel like they was hoping for a better candidate but I was the best of a duff load of candidates. I would still take it, dont get me wrong. I dont need the money, I need the experience.

I can only think I was offered the job without checking they had the power to do so. But that's very unlikely as it was the chief/ top boss.

If it's not the exact same job you applied for in the first place (as in, first candidate pulled out), then it think they have to advertise it by law.

Coulda given you a heads up though after all the promises in the last interview though.

Hi. I work in recruitment and could think of a number of scenarios. One (ie the decision maker or HR person) or all of the panel could have left / moved on ;lots of that happened recently) and the people who were very good for the job have been forgotten. You may have just slipped their minds even though you are on file. You may have been a perfect fit for that job and team but not the team may have shifted in culture or balance and they need to look for a different profile of person but with the same skill set.

Regardless.. what you really need to do (if you are keen) is to email 1 or 2 of the people that interviewed you before assuming they are still there so you have a point of reference. Dear x hope all is well. I see that you are advertising x job again. I was very keen last time around and was verbally offered the role. I have applied this time around too. I'm sure you'll have a number of applications to go though so I thought I'd contact you to let you know that I have applied to this.

Many thanks

X

Or something along those lines. Take your personal feelings out of it about what may or may lot have happened. If you want to make sure you aren't overlooked again then do this. Nothing to lose. Good luck.

ConeHat · 10/03/2021 16:13

@lemonsaretheonlyfruit thank you, good points. No, they are all still there.

I will swallow my pride and take my emotions out of the application process. It's just at a personal level its left me feeling shitty about myself. I know what they said, I know they said it, but it's just left me feeling like I'm really stupid or I was stupid to take it on word at the time. I will send my application cc'ing the person who made the offer.

It's not the job i applied for, it's a job that they knew was coming up very soon. They knew it was coming and said it was mine. If they need to re advertise i would understand- if they told me it was being advertised and would i reapply I would get that too.

It's the fact it's like we never had the conversation at all. I feel like I'm going mad, like did I just imagine that happened.

I think the most obvious choice is say its come up will I reapply? It's the radio silence. I feel like they didnt want me to see it. I cant see a more likely explanation than that. Still i have done the form so I'm quite happy to try again. If they was hoping and praying I wouldnt notice they can just not invite me for interview.

Wowee are you overthinking things.

Please don’t put that ‘note’ in, it won’t reflect well on you.

What happened when you phoned the person who offered it you? What did they say?

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 10/03/2021 16:19

Exactly that.. please stop taking it personally. You are projecting. Apply. Don't ask any questions of them. Write a simple email after you have applied to remind them you were verbally offered before alerting them to the fact that you have applied. That's it.

My workplace has three options for updating the system when you interview someone: hire, unsuccessful, keep on file. I only found out by chance that there was a systems error when a new job came up that I thought of a previous applicant for and tried to recall their details, which didn't work.

So it very feasibly could be something like that. I wouldn't take it personally, and just go for it. Good luck!
