BT Engineer is outside an hour ago!

I have a fault with my broadband and BT said that they will send an engineer to fix it between 8-1pm. I took the bin outside this morning and saw him sitting in the side street in his van. I came back quickly thinking he’ll knock on my door anytime but he didn’t! It’s been over an hour ago that I got the message that he’s on his way to me. I checked again and he was still in his van on his phone. I have a lot of things to get on with today. Shall I go and call him in or wait till he knocks?

Could be having breakfast in his van.

SpicyEnchiladas · 10/03/2021 08:54

Well he just rang me now and said that he’ll be here in 10 minutes as he’s stuck in traffic! Okay

He coud be doing anything, including waiting for an automated check on your line!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/03/2021 08:56

Grin Cross posted

Could be a different engineer!

MaMaD1990 · 10/03/2021 08:57

Haha this is hilarious (I know people who do the same job). Not funny that it's inconvenienced you and he's being a lazy oaf. They're supposed to give you a customer satisfaction survey to fill out on their phone, I'd ask him for that just before he leaves.

MaMaD1990 · 10/03/2021 08:57

Just had a thought! It may be another engineer that is coming to you and the one sat outside could be for another customer.

changi · 10/03/2021 08:58

There could be more than one on the job. Three turned up in separate vans to fix my neighbour's fault.

SpicyEnchiladas · 10/03/2021 08:58

@CuriousaboutSamphire I hope it’s a different one! It’s not nice to say you’re stuck in traffic when he’s been outside for over an hour.

He could be doing something like making a phone all or something. Maybe he had to call somewhere that didn't open until 8 so he drove to yours early. Maybe 🤷🏻‍♀️

SpicyEnchiladas · 10/03/2021 09:04

He’s here now, it’s him. He’s doing the line check.

Did he see you looking at him earlier? Does he realise he's been caught out in his lie?

williowrosenburg · 10/03/2021 09:09

His van will have a tracker in it so if you complained he'd be easily caught out!

What a silly thing to do!!

noraclavicle · 10/03/2021 09:10

Why don’t/didn’t you just ask him??

orpah · 10/03/2021 09:14

But he did come between 8-1 like you were told he would? Just because you’d prefer him to be there at 8 doesn’t mean he’s done anything wrong

^ this !!

CeibaTree · 10/03/2021 09:24

But you don't know what he was doing in his car - could have been catching up with paperwork, or doing some planning for the day. He is there on time, and not really any of your business what he was doing in his vehicle. He has done nothing wrong and it's not his problem you have lots of things to do today!

Exactly!
Fastforwardtospring · 10/03/2021 09:26

They have preliminary checks they can do on your line before they get into your house. They are measured on how many jobs they a day and report when jobs take a long time. I think you need to give the guy a break, the worst part of their job is dealing with the general public.

SpicyEnchiladas · 10/03/2021 09:28

@orpah I know that. The problem is he was outside an hour ago and then rang to say he’s stuck in traffic. Even before I got the message that he’s on his way to me. He did all the checks once he was in the house. He didn’t say that he checked anything from outside.

OP posts:
storminabuttercup · 10/03/2021 09:31

He will have done checks outside too as they try everything before entering a property due to Covid.

MichelleScarn · 10/03/2021 09:32

What 'harm' has it caused you? Where do you need to be for the lots of things that you need to be getting on with today and are they time dependent?

emilyfrost · 10/03/2021 09:32

YABU. He said he would be there 8am - 1pm; that’s your window. It’s irrelevant that you have a lot to do, that isn’t his problem; he wasn’t late.

Wishitsnows · 10/03/2021 09:34

They do have paperwork to do that they won't do in your house. Especially as they will want to minimise time in a house now. They will need to read the H&S assessment, check the fibre network route, book on/off site on one of their systems. She may have had a conference call to dial into before starting first job. Could be lots of things.

YesPleaseMary · 10/03/2021 09:36

It’s 8am on a Wednesday, I bet my house he’ll have been in the weekly team call with all the rest of his colleagues and their manager. He may have been looking at the fault details whilst doing that and narrowing down the location of the fault. And he probably said he was stuck in traffic because it’s a bit easier than explaining all the above. Doesn’t make it right though.

CeibaTree · 10/03/2021 09:36

So what, have you never told a white lie to someone in a work context? You don't know anything about his circumstances, maybe something urgent came up he was dealing with remotely, but he knew you'd already received the text message to say he was on his way, so he 'politely' told you he was stuck in traffic as a courtesy. I really hope you are not planning to complain about this. This kind of attitude reminds me why I would never work in a job dealing with the general public again!
