3 year old painful ear- how can I help?

I'm waiting for a call back from a doctor as my 3yo DS has woken up in lots of pain in his ear. He is crying out every few seconds with pain, calpol hasn't helped, he says he can hear noise in his ear too. He's hurting a lot so I called 111. Might take a few hours for a call back. What can I do to help him with the pain?

Try a warm flannel on his ear. The heat might help a little, poor thing.

Neurofen

He had calpol at 11pm, it says not to give both unfortunately

You can definitely give both. Try some ibuprofen, a warm flannel. I use to get horrific ear ache as a child. You could try distraction as well, putting a dvd on etc, hope you hear back soon!

Warmth- normally you can alternate Nurofen and Calpol thogh im not a medic. Nurofen generally is better for ear pain. If cant sleep distraction eg a quiet bit of tv on sofa.

Paracetamol and ibuprofen can certainly be given together. My doctor told me so when I presented myself and asked for immediate pain relief once.

A more immediate fix (I know that this is a few hours later) is to warm a little oil in your hand and spoon a drop or two in. Just olive oil or similar.

Definitely don't put oil in. My earache got alot worse and alot more infected after trying that.

Is it calpol you have or calprofen? If the latter, it's already a mix of the two which would explain it.
