Dresses and tights for baby girls

I was given a fair amount of these as presents in size range 0-3 months. My baby is finally big enough to wear them but oh my goodness they are quite a faff really compared to a top and leggings, is it just me? I haven’t bought her any dresses but seemed to be the default for presents. Don’t wish to sound ungrateful but wondered if others also found them a bit of a pain?

I cannot begging to tell you how much I hate seeing babies ‘dressed up.’ I don’t mean a light jersey/cotton dress, but when I see tulle skirts and tights etc. Seems so uncomfortable for the little mites? My DC were given so much of said type of clothing but I only ever dressed them in lovely baby suited clothing that was stretchy and comfortable. Even now aged 4 and 7, both practically live in leggings!

I've had 2 girls and we had loads of unworn dresses. My baby is nearly 1 and I occasionally put her in a dress now, but generally leggings and a vest with a jumper. Every day!

peachypetite · 09/03/2021 12:51

It’s mainly the tights! Most I was given are dungaree dresses so you have the bodysuit, then the tights then the dress.

Tights are quite handy when it's cold and baby has figured out how to remove socks. Put the tights on under trackies or shorts and watch baby attempt to remove them. It keeps their little footsies warm and will keep them busy for quite a long time.

NannyR · 09/03/2021 12:53

I don't really like the frilly, fancy dresses but I don't find it any more difficult to dress a baby in tights rather than leggings, similar designed garment, just different fabric.

peachypetite · 09/03/2021 12:54

It’s March now, not that cold and she has a thick pramsuit for walks outside

Tights and shorts were awesome for soft play and baby/toddler groups when they are crawling and walking.

Dresses for young babies are a faff, especially in summer as there's nothing to hold the nappy in place.

Yes, people do give cute, impractical baby gifts. I was giving pale pink jeans for mine. And a sleepsuit with buttons up the back.

peachypetite · 09/03/2021 13:02

@Aroundtheworldin80moves yep had a couple of those with the buttons down the back! I’m not sure what to do with all the dresses. Some of them will hardly get worn.

I do tights and shorts for my girl, then she can crawl and climb in them (she's now 2). Dresses are a faff - they kneel on them and lift them over their heads and not do much else.

steppemum · 09/03/2021 13:05

yes I hated baby dresses.
I usually tried to return/swap them.

and don't gte me started on seeing poor little girls trying to crawl in a silly dress/skirt.
soft trousers, leggings, tights under things when cold. Agree with tights and shorts for soft play - brilliant.

I didn't mind so much what used to be called angel tops which are tops that just cover the bum, so baby can still crawl. Usually worn with thick tights or leggings.

But there are tights and tights, some are soft stretchy and generous over the bum/nappy. Easy to get on, easy because no socks ot pull off etc. Some are too stiff, and not generous enough over nappy.

Metallicalover · 09/03/2021 13:07

My little girl is nearly two and always had a mixture of play suits, pants and dresses.
Tights are especially good for when they take their socks off. Never affected her crawling or playing. If I take her to the park then I put her in leggings but if she's wearing her puddle suit or snowsuit it doesn't make any difference!
I don't put her in big frilly dresses!

peachypetite · 09/03/2021 13:07

Glad it’s not just me. Unfortunately shops haven’t been open so I wasn’t able to exchange.

Mine is 5 months and I can count on one hand the days she hasn't worn a babygro. We arent going anywhere anyway!

peachypetite · 09/03/2021 13:48

@OhToBeASeahorse yes, lockdown has made it even worse too in the sense that we are at home 24/7 so why would I put such a young baby in a dress and tights. Sad

I prefer tights to socks. Not that keen on dresses.

IHaveBrilloHair · 09/03/2021 13:51

I put dresses and tights on Dd I didn't find it a bother and I liked seeing her in nice clothes.
I also sometimes just had a baby babygro and a cardigan on her and all sorts of other stuff.
My next door neighbour at the time had boy twins a year older so she had loads of hand me downs from them.

Princesspickle777 · 09/03/2021 13:54

I have two girls and have always hated dresses and tights on babies. I didn’t start putting dresses (Aside for a wedding/christening etc) until she was around 18 months. I’ve put my 10mo in them twice just to give them a chance again but remembered why I don’t. They’re such a faff plus mine have always got frustrated trying to crawl in them

OhToBeASeahorse · 09/03/2021 13:55

@peachypetite that's how I feel. So whenever I feel crap about it I buy something lovely for her to wear when she is older. I havent even bothered vetting most of her older brother's stuff. I know she is a girl and there is no one to correct!

IHaveBrilloHair · 09/03/2021 13:55

Put tights on a girl and they're awful and trussed up.
Put them on a boy to keep them warm and they're wonderful and a great idea.

Go figure

KavvLar · 09/03/2021 13:55

Ah I used to love a little jumper dress and tights set on my girls to be fair. They were both sock swipers from an early age so it kept their feet warm. I think with babies and toddlers a lot of the suitability rides on the material. If it’s soft and they could move easily in it then I’d have it.

peachypetite · 09/03/2021 13:59

It’s not something I would have thought about pre baby but I have realised all the things I’ve bought her to put buy for 3-6 and 6-9 months are leggings or trouser sets.

OP posts:
Megan2018 · 09/03/2021 14:04

I didn’t use them much until 6 months, then we did dresses and leggings/tights a bit until crawling.

Dresses are also rubbish for crawling, DD now walking ok at 18 months so have bought a few dresses for this Spring/Summer but will probably ditch tights again for potty training before long!

Our default is leggings and top though for most things, especially childcare. Easy on and off and easy to move in.

Nellythemouse · 09/03/2021 14:55

9-3 months mine lived exclusively in babygrows, with a few leggings and bodysuit outfits after that. Didn’t wear dresses until they could walk (and not often even then) and I don’t think they’ve ever worn tights, even at school age now. Trousers or leggings are so much more practical.
