Bloody Deer!

Calmyertits · 09/03/2021 02:28

Driving 70mph (at the speed limit i might add!) On the way home and a bloody deer ran out infront of me. Im in a job which means im very aware of how many people roll their cars or end up in serious accidents trying to avoid them by jerking the steering, so i braked and held my line but hit it pretty hard still. Yes very sad the deer is dead and I would of avoided it if i could but now the front grill bit of my bumper is smashed, think im missing fog lights, my radiator is exposed and theres a massive crack in the bumper. Hopefully the radiator isnt damaged and my cars not sat in a puddle of water when i go to do the school run. Im lucky Dp is in the motor trade but i could really do without the expense and im stuffed if my radiator is damaged and cars out of action until it gets repaired. And then there was no where to park either when i got home, got in bed eventually and realised id left some shopping in there i cant be arsed to go back out and get now aswell!

You missed the turning that has your sense of humour on it

Oh but the alternative is so much more edifying... and would help the deer enormously!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 09/03/2021 08:32

Deer were there before humans and certainly before cars - adjusting your speed to the area would have been the right thing to do.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 09/03/2021 08:39

I sometimes see deer on our nearest dual carriageway. I've seen some on the M6 before. I also know someone who trashed her car completely by jerking to avoid a deer and hitting a tree (and a wall as well)!

lollipoprainbow · 09/03/2021 09:08

@Soubriquet not at all I just don't find a child saying mummy killed a fucking deer particularly amusing but I guess we all have 'different' senses of humour.

Calmyertits · 09/03/2021 09:53

Radiator survived but bumper and grill will need replacing. So didnt end up being the worst.

I'm not in the UK - do you have signs on the road showing a deer in an area where they may cross ? We do in Ireland.
I'm sure it was very frightening.
Did you stop and move the body off the road ?

lightand · 09/03/2021 09:58

Was there a deer crossing, road sign?

lightand · 09/03/2021 09:59

Great minds @LadyEloise Grin

DGRossetti · 09/03/2021 10:01

Did anyone see the deer herd crossing the road in Hertfordshire ?

www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-55836451

We had a baby deer get it's head stuck in some railings in Quinton a couple of years ago. Apparently they wander into the city along the towpaths ...

CuriousaboutSamphire · 09/03/2021 10:06

I went to school a few miles from that deer herd crossing Smile

Hailtomyteeth · 09/03/2021 10:16

I hope you took the body home and ate it 'Waste not, want not' my grandma used to say.

My old boss had his car written off by a deer near Royston. The car wasn't very old either but the damage was just too much.
Calmyertits · 09/03/2021 10:24

I called the police as it landed in the right hand lane and a further hazard, so not possible to stop and pick it up or move it either. Plus my buggy was in the boot and i probably would of struggled to lift it and didnt fancy dumping a carcass in the back garden for kiddos to wake up too and i can barely cut a block of cheese let alone venison steaks aha!

DGRossetti · 09/03/2021 10:27

Wouldn't you need to gut, drain and hang it for a while if you're going to eat it ? I always wondered about the headroom.

I do like venison Smile

Tempusfudgeit · 09/03/2021 10:30

The speed limit is a maximum, not a target. I presume there are warning signs about deer in the area? And it's happened to you before. And now you're going to drive your children to school on two hours' sleep? No sympathy here.

steppemum · 09/03/2021 10:32

@Dinnafashyersel

Are you sure it's a 70mph? Are you in the UK? Don't know of any unfenced dual carriageway routes round our way so I'm surprised this is an issue.
well, plenty of them round here.

even if it is fenced well enough for cattle or sheep, deer can jump surprisingly high

idontlikealdi · 09/03/2021 10:36

We hit a camel on the way home from school once (ME, not Surrey!), we were luck to survive. The car was written off.

I live near the Ashdown Forest now and deer strikes are very common. National speed limit and no fences.

Yep.

Sympathy for the deer though.

actually, muntjac deer are not native to the UK, and are currently a bit out of control. Their population has no natural predators and they are in competition with our native deer for habitat.

So, no, these deer were not here before humans, but were introduced by humans, rather stupidly.

It is usually muntjac that cause accidents as other deer are much more shy

Calmyertits · 09/03/2021 10:39

No signs no, and its not much of a difference from the 3 hours i normally get due to my working hours and we walked to school if your that intrested. I find it interesting you presume im at fault, yes it has happened before, twice in 3 years. Along a very long stretch, several miles in fact of dual carriageway in the early hours of the morning. Even if i was driving 50mph i still would of hit it. I did nothing wrong.

lightand · 09/03/2021 10:40

Not safe to drive 70mph in an area with deer.

IFoundMyselfInThisBar · 09/03/2021 10:41
Hmm
Sparrowtree · 09/03/2021 10:43

It's really terrible having wildlife around. Just awful. We've nearly done away with most of the species. Give it a few more years and the deer will go too.
