WWYD- lingering smell

Wasn’t sure if I should post this, but I’m in two minds about the whole thing.

We moved house and purchased a new bed for DS. Bed arrived on schedule, put it together and started using it. However following day (fixed it up during the night), it smelt awful- not the usual new furniture smell. Waited a few days, smell was very strong, and with windows open (mid December), it didn’t make an ounce of difference. Stopped DS sleeping in the room, as was worried about potential risk (already asthmatic).

Contacted company who said to wait another week (had already been a week). Second week down and it was still awful, so they said they would contact manufacturers to collect bed. After a long 6 weeks, the manufacturer finally set a collection date. Dismantled bed and thought we were done. However, I don’t know what was causing the smell, but it seems to have imbedded itself within the carpet (I assume).
Have used the room since, but closing the door is impossible as you end up with the smell (not as strong). I’ve used various things on the carpet, from freshness to bicarbonate soda, but it’s not fully shifting.

The smell was definitely the bed as we’d been in the house for a while and there wasn’t such a smell at all beforehand (carpets brand new).

We are now considering getting the brand new carpet washed to see if that helps. It’s been so frustrating. So, would it be wise to contact the company again and try to find out what was wrong with the bed frame ( I’m assuming as it was shipped from Malaysia, and due to lockdowns they ‘over sprayed’ all furniture whilst in factories), and whether they should provide a solution to the lingering smell now?

Or should I forget that and get carpet washed with the hope that that will solve the problem?

Thank you for reading! Sorry about any typos, tying to use my phone for this Grin

I’d probably try something like a cut onion or lemon to see if it absorbed the odours as well as a carpet shampoo.
If not - you’ve not said what type of smell it is, I’d be wondering if it’s a coincidence and that there’s another cause of the bad smell? Dampness coming through, dead rodents or something?

Whatisthisfuckery · 09/03/2021 09:37

What is the smell like?

If it wasn’t there before then it’s the bed. I’d be on the phone demanding a refund/a replacement.

Thank you for the replies. The smell is exactly the same as the one from the bed (the off gassing), it’s very chemically type smell.

I’m going to try carpet shampoo, with the hope it works. And leaving a cut onion in the room, thank you

Try bi-carb in the carpet first. Sprinkle it in dry leave for a while then vacuum

PawPawNoodle · 09/03/2021 11:22

Does it smell kind of like pickles?

Sh05 · 09/03/2021 11:33

If the carpet is pretty new then try sprinkling bicarbonate of soda all over like you would shake n vac. Leave for a few hours then hoover up. Or you could try those odour nuetreliser sprays like 1001?

Ok so I’ve tried bicarbonate soda, still a linger, I then tried vanish carpet cleaner (where you sprinkle and vacuum), seems better, but there’s still a tinge of smell. I feel like it’s driving me potty now, if I put my nose to the carpet I don’t think it’s that any more Confused

@PolPotNoodle it is sort of pickles.

Dc (9) sleeps in the room, and I’m now stressing whether that is wise Sad

I’ve currently popped a few onions (slices) in the room, don’t know if that’s wise?
