Has anyone had a copper coil fitted?

Hello,

I don't really want to use hormone contraception anymore and we are okay using condoms but I wondered what experiences others have had with the copper coil

We're 95% sure we don't want anymore kids but we don't want to do anything permanent incase we change our minds.

Thank you

I've had one twice. First was for about 6 years before I ttc and this one has been fitted for about 8 years.

Periods are quite heavy and regular but no problems otherwise!

ScarfaceCwaw · 08/03/2021 19:28

I've used it for more than a decade before, between and after pregnancies. I love it - no upkeep, extremely reliable, no hormones, instantly reversible.

I found insertion briefly uncomfortable but fine. No side effects of note. If you struggle with heavy periods, you might want to consider an IUS first though, as they do tend to make periods a bit heavier. This wasn't an issue for me but is for some.

EbbandTheWanderingHearts · 08/03/2021 20:13

I love mine. I was worried it'd make my periods heavier but I've not noticed any difference. The mirena had me bleeding pretty much constantly for 6 mths and then every 2 weeks. My body can not cope with hormonal contraceptives so the copper coil was really my only option.

Before my first child, after and then replaced. Then after my 2nd again. My current one is a 10y one and almost 5y in.
I have had no issues with them.

Wannabegreenfingers · 08/03/2021 20:22

Yes, didn't get on with it. Much prefer the Merina. I'm on my 2nd.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 08/03/2021 20:22

Yup love it.

Corneliusmurphy · 08/03/2021 20:25

Yep, like it much better than the mirena. Periods are fine too.

Lilmzsnowflake · 08/03/2021 20:27

Had mine for 7 years with no problems. Periods pretty much the same as before. Only option for me as I can’t have hormone contraceptives but no complaints, love that I don’t have to think about it at all really!

CityDweller · 08/03/2021 20:32

Yup. Had one in for 12 (!) years before my first child. It was great (and clearly effective as we got pg v quickly after having it removed). Periods a bit heavier and crampier but nothing too bad.

FishyMcFishyfingersFace · 08/03/2021 22:40

Currently have my first one, had it nearly two years after feeling worse and worse on hormonal contraception for the previous 20+ years (apart from when having babies), really needed to get away from the pill and how bad it was making me feel.

Insertion was fine for me, periods are heavier but generally 4-5 days instead of my old 5-6 days. Been great, don't have to think about taking a tablet every day and will suit me until I go through the menopause! I would recommend anyone thinking about having one to try it, if it doesn't suit you it is easily removed.

Cococoffee · 08/03/2021 22:43

I've had mine for 5 years, no issues at all.

LittleBrownBaby · 08/03/2021 22:49

Unlike other posters I had an awful time with it. First was expelled and removed by a paramedic. Years later I tried again and had 7 months of the most painful heavy periods before I gave up. Seems I'm very much I. The minority though.

DwangelaForever · 08/03/2021 22:55

The only downside to mine has been heavy periods- but mine have always been heavy so I don't know if they're exclusive to the coil?

Insertation was fine I took paracetamol and ibuprofen and some calms lol. The dr tried to Insert it but noticed my discomfort and changed speculum to a longer one and said I should ask for this at my smears going forward as my cervix is quite high. Honestly it was a game changer I could barely feel it and this is coming from from a woman who cried at every smear test before this! My stomach was crampy and my period came like 2 days after insertion but it was fine.

RUOKHon · 08/03/2021 23:00

I’ve had one on and off for about 20 years. It’s bloody great. No hormones. Don’t have to think about it. My periods are fine. Would 100% recommend.

OwlinaTree · 08/03/2021 23:06

I'm on my second one. It is uncomfortable and a bit painful having it fitted, but after a day it was fine. Periods were heavier to start with, but seem to have calmed down again although it did take a few years. They were not longer though. I'm very happy with it.

I went for it as when I came off the pill to start a family my periods didn't come back and it took 18 months for them to return. I knew we would want more children so I didn't want to go back on the pill! I wouldn't bother with any other contraception now tbh, it's so easy.

bibbidybobbidyboo · 08/03/2021 23:11

I've got the copper one. My body doesn't react well to hormonal contraception and I wanted the certainty of something I couldn't forget to take. I absolutely love it, currently on my second one. Never had any noticeable side effects, and I love not having to think about it for years at a time. Insertion/removal was uncomfortable, but it was well worth it. I've never had children btw in case that's relevant.

haveapieceoftoast · 08/03/2021 23:12

I fainted & vomited during the fitting but apart from that, it’s great!

BreastedBoobilyToTheStairs · 09/03/2021 09:22

I'm onto my second. I've not had children so was really fearing the worst, but while the fitting was uncomfortable for me, it wasn't painful. My periods are no heavier with it in either, thankfully.

mrsawhite · 09/03/2021 09:24

I had one. Painful getting it fitted. And it expelled itself which was also hideous!

Everydaydragon · 09/03/2021 09:26

I've had 2. One before kids which hurt like hell going in but was better after a couple of hours. My periods became heavier for about 3 months but then went back to normal. Second one I didnt even feel going in

cosymama2020 · 09/03/2021 09:41

Yep - the best contraception I’ve had. Uncomfortable having it fitted for about 5 seconds and the first few periods were very heavy but settled very quickly and I don’t have to worry about hormonal mood swings, headaches or remembering to take the pill etc. When we had our first baby I conceived a month after having it removed so no lasting issues on fertility either!

MorePotatoSalad · 09/03/2021 09:46

Had it for 8 years. Take paracetomol or alcohol before having it fitted. I listened to music to calm myself. I called the nurse to beg them to remove it as was in pain over weekend after, she said stick the weekend out, then it was fine. Was just a shock as no idea it would hurt.

Periods were initially a bit more painful then less painful. They got shorter, but heavier. It was not really an issue but did find had to take Floradix or Spatone and sleep more on period.

I can't have hormonal contraception so very happy with it.

Ninkanink · 09/03/2021 09:53

I’m on my third copper coil now which should hopefully see me through to not needing one at all.🤞

I’ve never had any problems or issues with it.
