Addressing offensive song?

Hi, wanted some advice really. My child has just been participating in an online uniformed group and they have just been singing a song with the following lyrics.

Indians are high minded
bless my soul they're double jointed
They climb hills and don’t mind it
All day long.

Felt very uneasy about it as appears racist to me. Do people agree, it's not just me is it? And any tips on how I address?

@VeniVidiWeeWee

Well, you might want to take it up with the Smithsonian. They run the National Museum of the American Indian. To quote their website:

What is the correct terminology: American Indian, Indian, Native American, or Native?
All of these terms are acceptable. The consensus, however, is that whenever possible, Native people prefer to be called by their specific tribal name. In the United States, Native American has been widely used but is falling out of favor with some groups, and the terms American Indian or indigenous American are preferred by many Native people.

And doesn't that take the biscuit? You looked up what US First People would prefer to be called on a white privilege institutions website.

O.K. How about The National Congress of American Indians?

From their website:

"Founded in 1944, the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) is the oldest, largest, and most representative American Indian and Alaska Native organization serving the broad interests of tribal governments and communities."

Exactly what I was thinking @Moondust001. Talk about tone deaf.

@VeniVidiWeeWee stop!

@moondust1001

Do you know who the current head of the Smithsonian Institute is?

Veterinari · 08/03/2021 22:28

@NoMackerelInSwindon

To be clear I am asking you why you feel those words are racist.

I do not

Because they make unpleasant sweeping statements about an entire nationality/ethnic group

You may think calling an entire group of people pretentious and insinuating their use as manual labourers/slaves is ok because 'they don't mind it'

But if you go you're racist.

Veterinari · 08/03/2021 22:32

And yes it refers to national stereotypes about Indian people, not native Americans

High-minded - pretentious
Double-jointed - because of yoga and other similar 'exotic' activities
Hill climbing - because they're enslaved in tea plantations or used as Sherpas

Oh yeah definitely no harmful national stereotypes there Hmm

LaceyBetty · 08/03/2021 23:05

@Veterinari you are wrong. It's about Native Americans/Canadians.

Fair enough. To my mind that just makes it more racist though. How is referring to all native Americans simply as 'Indians' anything other than racist?
So the point stands regardless

LaceyBetty · 08/03/2021 23:11

@Veterinari agree!

Off topic but loving ur style 😆

I would be ' that parent' and email them. Maybe they are genuinely unaware how offensive it is to refer to indigenous people as Indians.
