Any opticians around please?

Hello ! I've been for an eye test today as I noticed over the past several months that my eyesight isn't as good as it was
(I've worn glasses for last 18 years)

Eye health was good apparently but the optician referred me to the hospital as my va (visual acuity?) has reduced from 6/6 to 6/9 which he said was unusual

I was too anxious to ask what this means and now I'm stressing - can anyone explain this please

Phone your optician and ask them

It means you should see two lines further (smaller) down the test chart with optimum correction worn.
Normal corrected eyesight should be 6/6 (20/20) 6/9 line is generally two lines larger.

I have a condition called keratoconus which gives me poor visual acuity. My vision cannot be corrected by glasses which was the big giveaway. Glasses seemed fine but then 2 week later my prescription would change again. Also had a lot of ghosting

6/9 means that the letters on the chart which should be read at 9 feet, you are only able to see at 6 feet. Which is only one line of the Snellen Chart. I have no idea why a optometrist would refer you to see an ophthalmologist for this, it’s really not a worry. You should contact your optometrist for clarification, they must be concerned about something else. Did they do a visual fields test on you? (Sita) Concerned about your intra ocular pressure? Contact them, it’s odd.

Metres, not feet!

@Mindgone Yes! Thank you!

zenasfuck · 08/03/2021 17:16

Thanks for the replies
@Diesse - so the reduced VA is not a concern ? The optician made me feel like I was losing my sight completely- I've been awake all night worrying 😩

Well it’s not a terribly dramatic drop, it warrants monitoring but I’d ask why you’re being referred. They’ll tell you, call them. Suspicion of glaucoma? Macula degeneration? Are you diabetic? The hospital eye service is on its knees (it was even pre this Covid shit show) so who knows when you’ll be called in any case.
