Before we went into tier 4, I was meant to buy new school shoes for DS but it didn't happen. Now I realise the day before that he doesn't have school shoes that fit. Is it OK to send him in with normal shoes tomorrow? I have bought him some shoes off Amazon and guessed his size but they don't arrive for a while

They did say they expect business as usual after Easter though which I think is fair..

Mine are going In trainers. Fuck it

@Justajot

We had a faintly arsy email from our primary school pretty soon after the reopening timetable was announced telling us that supermarkets are open and sell shoes and uniform, so they expected full uniform. If your school hasn't said that then you're probably fine.

I'd rather our school took a more pragmatic approach like other schools.

We had an arsy email similar to this. Ours went one further and basically told us not to take this excuse to take the piss with it. That dark pumps or trainers would do for a few days but not to expect to see out the term and to get suitable shoes ASAP or they will be chasing up with us.

It's ridiculous that the government made the point in their return to school guidance that all children should be in full uniform upon return.
As if people don't have enough to worry about. Speak to your school.

That is so shit of them, especially with only 3 weeks left until end of term.

I work in a primary and have had several emails saying parents are unable to get shoes, trousers, jumpers. It’s a primary and we have agreed to be lenient with uniform for the first 2 weeks to allow people to get hold of uniform. After that we will be expect uniform to be worn in full.

Are all the shops going to be open and sufficiently stocked within two weeks to allow for this? With all that's been going on since Christmas, two weeks is really harsh and uncaring IMHO. So many families have suffered financially from COVID; there will probably be plenty of parents who have been struggling to afford the basics whilst looking at brand new school clothes that have been outgrown before their intended wearer was able to return to school. Shoes especially, as they're so expensive and need to be more precise than other items.

Standing over them for just two weeks shaking your head and then, after that, punishing them/their children for not being able to afford/find the requisite clothes is 100% against the spirit of us all being in this together and really rather nasty.

Agree webuilt

Any one who has to order stuff from a designated website will have had ti have ordered already and 2 weeks is not long enough. Certainly dd1s online supplier has taken up to 6 weeks before and there's always something outstanding too that arrives weeks later.

Shoes need fitting too . No good just ordering a size. The measuring is just a guide. U may measure a six but take anything from a 5.5 to a 7 depending on the shoe. Be easier to wait til April and buy 1 pair instead of 3.

Supermarkets may be open but we aren't meant to be taking our kids to the shop if possible and the changing rooms are closed.

Its been 3 months and many have had lock down growth spurts.. buying a size or 2 up may work for shirts but trousers amd skirts not so much.

Last thing parents need is uniform stress

Bethanemethane · 08/03/2021 07:30

My sons secondary school (who are normally strict) have said no uniform until after Easter holidays to give parents a chance to get what they need. Seems sensible as everything has been shut for so long and my children have grown so much. So he will be going in tracksuit bottoms and trainers initially.

DeathMetalMum · 08/03/2021 07:36

Our primary school sent an email on Friday and basically said don't worry if they have grown out of anything. Just send them in something appropriate for the time being. I haven't bought anything new - trainers they were wearing before Christmas instead of shoes still fit luckily. I'm hoping that they are back for good now but who knows.

TheABC · 08/03/2021 10:11

My school have actually go one further and asked if we can send them in with trainers for running around (outdoor play/exercise is a high priority). They have also said not to stress too much over uniform; "tidy" is fine.

My problem was not the shoes; it was trying to find trousers after DS had a growth spurt! I blaming that one on DH's genes.

Crappyfridays7 · 08/03/2021 10:19

My kids are going wearing their trainers. They’ve to wear jogging bottoms and polo shirt/school jumper which will look daft with school shoes. I had bought my youngest lovely hush puppie school shoes they have hardly been worn and he’ll be out of them before they are back in school uniform.

Teen has been told to wear pe kit on the days he has pe at school. So as he is doing compulsory pe and pe studies he wears his kit every day and is loving it. He’s back for a practical subject once a week and they wanted them in full uniform & his trousers are too short and his shirts too small and buggered if I’m buying more for 2 hours a week. Once they go back in full uniform then that’s different. Another week before my p4-7 go back and no idea when s4-6 will return no word yet which is ridiculous as they have coursework to finish and need back to school.
