Holidays in Cornwall

Hello all,
Im looking to book a holiday to Cornwall for myself, DH and my preschool 4 year ds (covid allowing). We're hoping to go the last week of June before the schools break up. I've been looking at Perran Sands and places in Bude, I think it's called Sandymouth. DH just suggested stopping off in Devon for a night beforehand to break up the driving, having a look around there and then carry on to St Ives or somewhere else close by. I'm wondering if anyone else has done this and if it's a good idea or not. It would take us about 6ish hours to drive straight to Cornwall from where we live so I'm thinking stopping off at Devon may be a good idea! If anyone has any other tips about holidaying in Cornwall that would be great :) Tia

Devon and remember you are nearly there. Bude is only just in Cornwall.

You may have to leave the accommodation in Devon early and then spend most of the day wasting time with a full car before being able to get into your Cornwall accommodation. Finding a one nighters won't be easy either.

But breaking back of journey is good especially if travelling on a busy weekend. I think I would do a Travelodge or Premier Inn where can check out a bit later. Where are you coming from?

FedNlanders · 07/03/2021 16:25

We go to perran sands every year. 6hrs is fine we leave at 4am and stop for lunch at 7 then go on to Perranporth.

With a 4yo DS, I’d recommend Diggerland! We did it on our way back from Cornwall a few years ago and stayed in a B&B called Newcourt Barton.

Thank you, that's really helpful. Kezzie200 we're traveling from South Hertfordshire

If Diggerland is good then you may be able to get a one nighter at a motel or, as the other poster says, a B and B.

I fear this year will be busy down here and I can see one nighters being turned down by many as they take advantage of the demand.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday. I love Bude!

I notice you may go to St Ives. That's much further down into Cornwall. June is a great month. Cross fingers it's sunny and we can be open

We always go to St Ives/Hayle and leave at 2.30am takes about 6 hours from Lincolnshire, call in at Philps for a pasty for breakfast then onto Asda for supplies before heading to the campsite.

A Philps pasty, breakfast of the gods.

Recommend a stop at the Hedge and Hog for amazing coffee to gird your loins for final push into Cornwall proper.

Have a great time wherever you end up.

Get up early and do it one journey.

When I were a lass we used to set off in the evening and sleep in the car for a few hours.

I love hayle too!!! Been there for the past few years.

ballsdeep I am a bit tearful tonight, we go often (West Wales too) it won't be long until we can go again, yes?

Fingers crossed!! We were supposed to stay in hayle last year and it was cancelled. It's my happy place I love it. So much.
Cornishclio · 07/03/2021 21:38

I live in Cornwall and think it will be heaving this year but if you come out of school holiday and don't go to St Ives when the G7 conference is on you as Carlton Bay is right next door you should be ok. I think that is in June. If you plan to stay in Bude there is no point in breaking the journey in Devon as Bude is literally only just over the border from there. Fine though if you are going further down into Cornwall.

MrsJBaptiste · 07/03/2021 21:58

We drive from York to Cornwall and just do it all in one go. It can be a long slog (10 hours one year and then we had to put the tent up!) but if you leave early doors, you won't hit too much traffic until you get near Bristol.

We're not going this year and I'll miss it, I love Cornwall although the weather is definitely hit and miss! 🌤🌬🌧

CornishTiger · 07/03/2021 22:03

G7 Summit will be held in Carbis Bay, st Ives Cornwall from 11-13th June 2021 avoid the area before and just after tbh.

MrsMoastyToasty · 07/03/2021 22:04

Somewhere like Bristol or Bath is 3 hours (and therefore halfway ) from Cornwall but to be honest by sharing the driving and just stopping for fuel and a pee you might as well stay on the road. This is the tactic we use when we drive from Bristol to Glasgow (6 hours).

Fifthtimelucky · 07/03/2021 22:13

Personally I'd drive it all on one day. Pack the car the night before and leave by 6am with child still asleep and in pyjamas. Then have a decent stop for brunch and crack on so that you arrive early afternoon.

Sandymouth is one of my absolute favourite beaches. Love it!

Ilovechoc12 · 07/03/2021 22:29

My 4 hour journey ended up being a NINE !!!!! Hour journey with toddlers (leaving Cornwall at 9am on a change over day)
Restaurants booked out months in advance
I stayed in padstow - dog central to the world.

Body boarding is good but we are never going back .... far too busy - same price as 5 star all inclusive abroad when you get a nice house.

Good luck that traffic is crazy ! Plus once we had horrendous floods ..... I’d be careful booking Cornwall x if the weather is good it’s fabulous but I’ve been in dairy world in the pissing rain and it’s bad with 4 little toddlers/ babies x it’s gone too popular x

Ellmau · 08/03/2021 00:30

A stopoff is a good idea. If you do it at Sidmouth you could go and see the donkey sanctuary there.

CornishTiger · 08/03/2021 06:57

Is it really that bad getting here? I suppose I’m used to traffic but we do avoid travelling too far around Cornwall in peak summer.

I wouldn’t be bothered in June though. Just late July and August.

Super looking forward to people coming to enjoy the area though- economy needs it. Can everyone just remember where the reverse gear is in lanes please though?! 😂😘

FedNlanders · 08/03/2021 09:00

We do suffolk to Cornwall every year and never had an issue with traffic or super busy.

Jojoanna · 08/03/2021 09:03

Love Bude ! We always do it in one go ,, but stoop off at service stations to stretch out legs

VenusClapTrap · 08/03/2021 09:15

Philps pasties you say? Please tell me more.

We have booked a cottage on The Lizard for the summer half term week at the end of May. Will the restaurants really be booked up months in advance? Shock I better try and book some now!

GuyFawkesDay · 08/03/2021 09:37

Philps are based in Hayle but sold around Cornwall. The steak and stilton pasties are a thing of beauty.
