How would you 'dress' this window please?

My parents have moved into a house with this large kitchen window - it's got a good view of the garden and lets in lots of light, but they'd like to be able to cover it at night for cosiness. Any ideas how to do that, please? Thanks!

Gathered fabric blind?

I can’t see any other option than curtains really. You could try a Roman blind but it would have to be very long and would block a lot of light when it’s up.

Curtains I think. John Lewis do a good range, though you may have to wait a few weeks before you can visit them in person.

I would use a roman blind and set it outside the window recess so when it was fully up it would sit mostly, if not fully, in the area above the window.

Alternatively it could sit inside the recess. They don't take up a huge amount of space and I think the window is big enough for it not to block too much light or be intrusive when it was fully up.

I think curtains would look good, one curtain, not a pair; pulled to the right so, when open, it fills that piece of wall.

That or wooden shutters.

Thanks all - a Roman blind in the recess would cover too much of the window I think - the garden is raised and you'd lose the view of the sky. Curtain definitely an option - would it look odd if just one pulled to the right? Better to the left maybe?

I did wonder about a vertical blind but don't know if what I'm thinking of exists... sort of a nicer, more homely version of the kind you get in offices?

I have a variety of Venetian blinds in my home because I like the clean minimalist look. If you have them outside the recess there is no loss of light. Pale wood or white wooden ones would work. There are some good suppliers online.

Plantation shutter?

milinhas · 07/03/2021 17:52

I like the idea of those folding solid wooden shutters you get in French houses - couldn’t find a really good picture but kind of like this - painted in a strong colour that goes with the rest of the kitchen.

How about a bottom-up blind so you don't lose sky/view?

Extra wide single curtain, something thick and lined, defo pulled to the right to cover the sockets too.
