If you gave up sugar tomorrow...

I'm going on a sugar detox tomorrow and I'm pondering the unwise 'last treat'.

What would yours be ?

Probably a slice of cheesecake.

0hMy · 07/03/2021 07:41

Probably a sugar feast of everything! I need to do a detox. If I had to limit it to one treat, I’d say a cup of tea (one sugar) with a really nice piece of cake - maybe a chocolate cake?
I really want cake now!

aweegc · 07/03/2021 07:45

I'd raid the cupboards and eat every single thing in them that has sugar that might later be tempted by!

TheJackieWeaver · 07/03/2021 07:45

I might do this too. I think I’m a bit of an ‘all or nothing’ person. Cutting down isn’t really working for me.

Plus, it’s an excellent excuse to have a massive slice of cake today.

SeeyouontheothersideofCovid · 07/03/2021 07:48

Hi that's a great resolution but how do you truly achieve this? Are you intending just to avoid the obvious culprits, such as cake, ice cream, desserts, biscuits, sugary drinks ...

But what about stuff that has sugar in the background eg alcohol, baked beans, most flavours of crisps, and a whole lot of foods where sugar is listed as an ingredient?

Please elaborate further, thank you.

Nellle · 07/03/2021 07:49

Pasta (if you're really giving up sugar)

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 07/03/2021 07:52

I'm tempted to do it too. I have no off switch where sugar is concerned.

I think I'd go big cream cake - a chocolate eclair or profiteroles or something.

greengrey · 07/03/2021 07:58

I want a piece of rocky road with a hazel nut latte.

Going to Costa to collect this counts as essential, right?

My husband doesnt eat any sugar at the moment, but Oohhh my goodness, I eat so much sugar I wouldn't know what I miss the most, probably my big bars of dairy milk crunchie and cake.

NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 07/03/2021 08:20

I'm considering doing this, my last treat would probably be a big slice of chocolate fudge cake with a hot chocolate that has cream and those tiny marshmallows on top.

MrsGulDukat · 07/03/2021 08:22

I started sugar detox on Friday. I has a sugar binge on Thursday so I thought a better do it.

Day 3 and feeling okish atm.

Silvercatowner · 07/03/2021 08:27

You can give up refined sugar relatively easily, but to give up sugar entirely is almost impossible - you'd be cutting out fruit, which isn't sensible. I gave up refined sugar 6 months ago - no biscuits, cakes, sugared drinks etc etc and have dropped 2 dress sizes. I do give myself a break on special days but go back to it afterwards.

Itstartedinbarcelona · 07/03/2021 08:31

silvercatowner do you find it easy to go back to once you have eaten something sugary again? I’ve just started cutting out refined sugar but I’m worried if I eat a bit again I’ll fall off the wagon completely. Then again it feels unrealistic to avoid it completely.

Silvercatowner · 07/03/2021 09:32

Actually I do - it feels natural and right. But I'm old and have been overweight for nearly 50 years now. So about time I did something about it...

chillied · 07/03/2021 10:17

I've been doing this (no sugar no snacks) since mid February and lost 2.6kg so far. Very encouraged by the two dress sizes lost!

For me right now, just the obvious sugar. So no puddings, yoghurts, biscuits, cakes. I'm eating fruit and occasionally I have baked beans as I count them as savoury. I thought I'd struggle but I'm not, maybe because I haven't had to adjust the 'main meals which tbh are usually relatively healthy. It was dessert and snacking letting me down.

I've done low carbing before and it really works, I'm a big fan, but my willpower isn't up to it at the moment. Low carbing does mean I have to create an alternative version of the family meal.

In normal times I've got quite the sweet tooth. But I've managed to flick the switch in my mind that says you're not allowed that about anything you'd define as a pudding.

chillied · 07/03/2021 10:20

ps seeyouontheotherside I don't drink alcohol anyway and crisps are out because of the no snacking part rather than the no sugar...

MrsGulDukat · 07/03/2021 10:41

I dont drink so that was easy to cut out.
Not a fruit fan either so dont have that.
Nor baked beans or the like. And no jar sauces.
No cakes, crisps, biscuits or chocolate of any kind.
Gave up fizzy drinks in September.
Also low carbing aswell.

Oh, if you find you have a craving that you cant ignore, try a slice or two of lemon in hot water. It takes the edge off it.

SeeyouontheothersideofCovid · 07/03/2021 11:36

Ah I hold up my hand and confess I have a very sweet tooth. Am currently abiding by SW principles and have lost about half a stone and using my "syns" allowance for the sugary treats. I have also cut out alcohol and it's all working very well though the weight loss is very slow.

But it means I can still enjoy regular carbs and some sweet treats, so I'm happy and don't feel at all deprived.

SeeyouontheothersideofCovid · 07/03/2021 11:38

If you haven't read it already, Dr Zoe Halcombe has some really interesting stuff to say about sugar and white carbs (which effectively act like sugar when they are broken down by the digestive system). You'll be glad to stop consuming sugar after reading her take on it.

So if you do manage to kick the hard stuff you will be doing really well and deserve a pat on the back.

BrownEyedGirl80 · 07/03/2021 11:42

I had 3 cadburys cream eggs last night as a final goodbye

greengrey · 07/03/2021 13:21

I know it won't be as easy as cutting out all sugar.

I'm aiming for refined sugar to start with rather than going all out. I don't want to give up fruit, I love berries and bananas too much.

I'm just off down the retail park for that rocky road. I'll be gutted if they're out of stock!
