Are there two types of people?

Having a conversation with a friend and wondered if this is a 'push the meeting back' type scenario.

Do you tune into the lyrics in songs and think about and be moved by them just as much as the music, or do you hear the music and the melody but not really take in the words?

If it's got a good beat, I dance Glitterball

FlibbertyGiblets · 06/03/2021 13:41

Opera no, my Italian is awful so toreeeadorrrroh dumt e dumt e duuun etc. Enjoy the music.

CosyAcorn · 06/03/2021 13:44

Yes, I think and over think lyrics. Most recent example is a Kylie song where she sings "When I go out, I want to go put dancing". And I can't decide if she is talking about living life to the full right up until the moment she dies or whether she's just talking about a good night out.

Work colleague said she thought it was all about dancing and that I've made the song depressing 😁

36degrees · 06/03/2021 13:53

@CosyAcorn I think I am definitely in your camp. The overthinking of the lyrics is definitely half the fun for me.

The tune primarily, otherwise it might as well be a poem.

Also, you can sing along if you know the tune but not the words, but not vice versa.

CarnageAtTheCheeseFactory · 06/03/2021 14:08

I heard a saying once;

If you are happy, you listen to the beat.
If you are sad, you listen to the words.

CarnageAtTheCheeseFactory · 06/03/2021 14:09

I’m not saying it’s true, btw, though it might be for some people .

thistimelastweek · 06/03/2021 14:12

My husband belongs to a third group. He thinks he knows the lyrics but gets them wrong, every single time.

Sparklingbrook · 06/03/2021 14:16

I'm not fussed about the lyrics, but do like a good bass line.

user2021 · 06/03/2021 14:16

Just like this music. And often the music video changes things for me too.

But if I play a song over and over, then maybe I'll give a thought to the lyrics.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 06/03/2021 14:17

I need to know and understand the words of a song before I can enjoy it.

DuckonaBike · 06/03/2021 14:21

Depends a bit on the individual song but yes, the lyrics are definitely really important to me.

GoldenMalicious · 06/03/2021 14:26

I only hear the music, I rarely hear lyrics and give next to no thought to them. They could sing ‘rhubarb rhubarb’ for all I know. It always surprises me when people can sing along to a song as I just won’t have heard the words at all.

EmpressSuiko · 06/03/2021 14:37

The lyrics are very important to me as well as the sound, I like to understand the meaning of a song which is most probably why I don’t enjoy repetitive songs or songs that lack a story or any emotion.

Sparklingbrook · 06/03/2021 14:40

I know the lyrics word for word to loads of songs from the 80s, hardly any of them make sense, but they have brilliant tunes.
Take Duran Duran, their lyrics make no sense on the whole but you can't say they didn't produce catchy songs and fantastic basslines.

Carmen's in French Grin.

I usually sing along if it's something I like. The meaning of the lyrics is important.

There are definitely two types of people. Those with rhythm and those without.

I think you’re right www.billboard.com/articles/news/pride/8099932/kylie-minogue-dancing-death-interview
Trinacham · 06/03/2021 14:46

I take note of the lyrics. I often find myself googling songs to try and find out what the lyrics mean

I think she wrote that while she had cancer, and was thinking of end of life. She talked about it on Graham Norton, and how it had changed her

I have always thought it was a living life to the fullest and going out means dying. DH thought it was just about clubbing. He thinks I'm a bit weird for hearing it that way so I'm glad I'm not alone!

not true for me. I love sentimental things/songs that make me feel emotional, but I'm a happy, positive person. There's a difference between being emotional/reminiscing, and feeling sad!
Sparklingbrook · 06/03/2021 14:52

Over the first lockdown I watched a lot of Reaction videos. People in their twenties watching videos from the 80s.
One girl watched Don't You Want Me by the Human League and she took the lyrics v seriously. She decided that Phil Oakey wanted to kill the waitress in a cocktail bar and himself. (We will both be sorry). Shock Grin
Also Livin' on a Prayer-all about survival and keeping afloat.

for me music first words 2nd

That said, very repetitive words drive me crazy. Can't stand them.
