DD usually wears sports style or fitted cami vest style bras however she has developed quite a bit over the last few month, she will be returning to school and really needs a properly fitted bra. Unfortunately, there is nowhere open to take her for a fitting.

I've measured her as -

Underbust - 31in
Overbust -34in

I've done the Bra Intervention years ago for myself and found it made a fantastic difference. Should i follow these guidelines for DD which would make her a 30C or the traditional method which tells me she is a 32B?

I can't afford the time or money atm to buy a load of different sizes/styles to try so any advice/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Smile

What clothes size is she?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 05/03/2021 16:50

I'd use the Boob or Bust method (which I think is the first size you gave). Matalan do reasonably priced bras. I ordered 4 assorted sizes on click and collect at £8 each and just dropped the ones I didnt want back at the store for them to return.

Usually a 10-12 or age 14-15 (13-14 usually dont fit as she's tall - 5 ft 6.5 )

Thanks, I will probably give that a go. There aren't any non-essential shops open nearby so its either supermarket or order (and return) online.

Op could you get her one of those stretchy cropped bra? I've got a few from Uniqlo and they are so much more comfortable than proper bras plus you don't need to worry about size too much.

Zebee · 05/03/2021 17:01

I found DD didn’t like the tight feeling round her chest and so she is wearing a bigger size around the chest while she gets used to wearing it even though I now she should have a chest band one size smaller. Have ordered M&S ones that have a wider band which she likes.

That's what she's been wearing up until now, but the ones she has don't seem to give great support. Maybe I need to just find better ones? It would certainly help with the sizing headache I'm giving myself.

DD is in 1st year, had a school jumper on when school was on last year so didnt matter what she was wearing underneath but now the weather is improving she won't want to have a jumper on all the time.

I'm fully expecting exclamations of "I can't breathe" and " Are you trying to kill me?" Hmm which is why I thought maybe I need to start with the traditional method of measurement first. However, I'm really leaning towards sticking with sports style bras until the shops re-open.

There's a nice three pack (pink, grey, black) for £12 at Matalan soft bra two hooks, my dd is the same measure and is in a 32b. Very comfortable introductory bra & forgiving when she is larger at period time.

"I'm fully expecting exclamations of "I can't breathe" and " Are you trying to kill me?" hmm

Is now the time to watch some historical movies to show her how bad it used to be ? So she can be relieved she doesn't have to wear a bloody corset Grin

PlayingTheDevilsAvocado · 05/03/2021 19:46

I bought DD some 30C from George Asda. Very cheap. Amazingly well made. (She won’t wear them). They don’t seem to make them by cup size anymore, only age. We tried the age ones and they’re much too big around the back.

PlayingTheDevilsAvocado · 05/03/2021 19:53

Actually, I lied. They’re 28C or you could have had some.

The John Lewis bras that look like they’re discontinuing are great. The unpadded and non wired petite styles. A few left in 30C on the sale for £7

InglouriousBasterd · 05/03/2021 19:57

I’ve actually gone up a back size with DD from 30 to 32 - she also measures 31 - and she’s so much more comfortable. First bras are a shock! George at Asda have been winners here.

I might just do that Grin Saying that, it's bad enough having to wear a mask all day, I dont want her to feel all trussed up and uncomfortable as well.

Thanks, I'm going to give the Asda ones a go as they're very reasonable priced so I can try a few sizes and if they don't fit it'll be easy to return them in store.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to help ❤

32B

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 05/03/2021 23:17

I’m a 30F and still wear those stretchy crop/sports bras, so they’re definitely an option if she struggles with “traditional” bras, which I find really uncomfortable/restrictive. Can recommend Calvin Klein, she’d be a small, but even places like ASOS have a good selection.

RedSoloCup · 05/03/2021 23:58

My girls love the new look ones, Unwired by ages and then by cup size

TwoShades1 · 06/03/2021 05:14

I think one of the first questions is does she want a different style of bra/crop top? Or does she just need some new ones as current ones are stretched/worn out. Even when breastfeeding at a 32E I was quite comfortable day to day with just a stretchy crop top. I only wanted more support for things like exercise. There are a lot of sports crops which are very supportive but don’t have cups and are just sized like clothes.

LinghamStyle · 06/03/2021 09:36

It's not so much that her current ones are stretched out, I think they're just not designed to provide much (or any) support. Which was fine when I bought them as she didn't need much support.

She played a lot of contact sport pre-lockdown so has a few decent sports bras but they're all black or bright colours.

I've looked at some of the suggestions and have decided to get a couple of the bras from Asda for her to try and some of the crop top style ones but with more support. I can only imagine, knowing her like I do, that in the end comfort will win over wearing what her peers are wearing.
