Google thinks having an abortion or miscarriage is ‘failure’

So if you google ‘failure’ one of the suggestions that comes up in Google is abortion and miscarriage

I’m outraged. But I don’t know what to do about it, there isn’t exactly someone I can email to to complain!

Isn't it classified as a failed pregnancy? Am sure I've heard that term for a miscarriage at least

Willow4987 · 03/03/2021 18:59

Aren’t google suggestions generated based on what people search for...so maybe some people are searching these terms rather than google setting them

They are both terms for failed pregnancy. The terms can be applied to other situations, in which case they mean failure.

Poppins2016 · 03/03/2021 19:01

I see where you're coming from... but it depends on context.

E.g.

"miscarriage of justice"
"abort a flight"

kowari · 03/03/2021 19:02

A miscarriage can just mean 'an unsuccessful outcome of something planned'

SendMeHome · 03/03/2021 19:02

Google licenses Oxford Dictionary for that. If you’ve seen it yourself; you’d report it to them - it pulls in from them.

It’s likely to be there as an associated word due to “failed pregnancy”, so likely won’t be removed, as it’s not intended as a judgement.

But it’s not Google, and it doesn’t appear to show up often. It doesn’t for me.

Hollywhiskey · 03/03/2021 19:03

Also it could relate to other situations. It could mean miscarriage of justice for example or if you have to abort a plan or mission that would be a failure. It's not just about pregnancy.

TitusPullo · 03/03/2021 19:04

Google didn’t hand select those responses, they are from a dictionary or user generated content. As others have said they are used in pother contexts. Stand down with your outrage.

JackieWeaversMum · 03/03/2021 19:04

Abort a mission!
Miscarriage of justice!
These are actual words used in a different context. You need to calm down and stop pearl clutching lovely

LittleRa · 03/03/2021 19:05

A failed mission- “abort abort!”

Snookie00 · 03/03/2021 19:06

Doesn’t come up on mine. Perhaps it’s because you’re googling those topics.

Why are you so outraged by it? They are both failed pregnancies in that the standard outcome wasn’t achieved.

Batmansrightfoot · 03/03/2021 19:06

A miscarriage of justice means a failure of the judicial system
Aborting a mission/flight etc means to to end it prematurely i.e you fail to successfully carry it out.

Stop being precious and looking for offence where there’s no need. Abort and miscarriage both have other meanings.

MrsComte · 03/03/2021 19:07

What a silly thread.

I had an argument on FB with someone recently who described an ugly building as an 'abortion'. I said it was gross and insensitive.

I think it's an archaic phrase.

Given that the world is batshit, could they have meant aberration?

OP it's just a medical term.

KindergartenKop · 03/03/2021 22:34

@LunaHeather we discussed it at length, apparently it can be used in that context!

Naturally it was a man who used it.

Gooo · 04/03/2021 03:40

You seem over sensitive. Words can relate to more than one situation.
When running tests on my analyser at work and fails it says the test was “aborted” - a completely accurate word to use in that situation.
And I hear the media talking about miscarriages of justice all the time.

theThreeofWeevils · 04/03/2021 05:17

I’m outraged
Oh dear what a pity never mind. Nasty, heartless OED, eh?

ChocOrange1 · 04/03/2021 06:39

Google doesn't "think" anything

MrWendel · 04/03/2021 06:41

I think you have misunderstood this quite badly OP... Biscuit

SingANewSongChickenTikka · 04/03/2021 07:47

Google are just returning search results, they’re not providing definitions. Regardless, as plenty have pointed out the words have meaning in multiple context, not just pregnancy.

Carolina24 · 04/03/2021 07:49

It can mean those things - ‘the mission was aborted’, ‘there was a miscarriage of justice’. It’s just part of the layered meanings of those words, rather than a moral judgment by google.
