TV- on demand Vs 'live'.

The CBBC thread got me thinking...
I can't remember the last time we watched TV as it is broadcast, with the exception of DH watching sport.
We just choose whatever we fancy from the various catch up/streaming channels on the Roku 'stick'.
The only person I know who does watch stuff 'live', that isn't live sport, is my Mother... But she mostly records and then watches at a more convenient time. (She doesn't understand catch up apparently, and finds it easier to do it that way)
Friends etc also just use catch up/streaming.

Which do you think is more common now?

I get the impression from the few times that viewing figures are mentioned it's about 60-70% live.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/03/2021 14:56

I wonder if it depends on the type of programme... I can how the programmes with voting for example might attract more live viewers (i forget about those as it's not what we normally watch) And obviously sport.

We watch at least 90% live TV. We have Netflix but rarely use it.

Yeah definitely shows like X factor/celeb ect must be watched more live.

We haven't had a tv licence for 2 years because we dont watch anything live, I wonder if it is more.of.a generational thing because the only people i know who watch tv live are my parents & inlaws

MedusasBadHairDay · 03/03/2021 15:09

I don't remember the last time I watched live TV, tbf even prior to Netflix etc I was more likely to watch DVDs than live. I like the convenience of watching what I want when I want.

4 years ago l put my TV in my cloakroom when l was decorating my apartment.
In the mean time l just started to watch TV on my ipad using the usual suspects, Catch up, Netflix... torrent sites, youtube.
4 years later my TV is still in my cloakroom gathering dust. Was gonna donate it to the local charity shop but they won't take electric goods. Ah well, Freecycle it is so.

Occasionally I will watch live tv if I turn it on and it is something that interests me for the 20 minutes I eat lunch but mostly I watch Netflix or Amazon Prime in the evening mainly because I can never sit down for that long and I prefer to stop the programme so I can go and make a drink or finish off cooking or stop a cat fight etc
I can’t remember the last time I sat down to watch a programme I had planned to watch at the time it was broadcast live

HugeAckmansWife · 03/03/2021 15:32

yes mostly watch on catch up, mostly cos I am doing bed time around 9pm with the kids which is when most things start. I also prefer to watch something that's 6-8 episodes long in maybe 2/3 chunks rather than one a week. My parents also still record things on the sky box. The only think I would do that with is the PBS channel but I don't have Sky and there is no catch up option that I can find.

Alwaysandforeverhere · 03/03/2021 15:34

Don’t watch live tv at all. Also can’t stand those voting shows like xfactor or imaceleb. Grew up bored to death with emerdale and Corrie on telly so I’ve never been into that stuff either where people must be at the tv for 7pm the stuff.

kateybeth79 · 03/03/2021 15:35

We never watch live TV and haven't done for years. My kids can't comprehend not being able to fast forward through adverts, they don't understand live at all.

BumpGrowingAndINeedPantsPlease · 03/03/2021 15:35

The only live tv we watch really is the news. Everything else is on demand/catch up/Netflix. It’s much more convenient and it’s great not to have to suffer the ad breaks on the channels which have them.

Crankley · 03/03/2021 15:42

I mostly watch live and the rest on Netflix or Prime. The latter irritates the hell out of me, so many programmes don't have subtitles which I need and so many programmes you have to pay another subscription (eg hayu) which is a fucking rip off. If I didn't need Prime for deliveries, I would cancel it.

Brogues · 03/03/2021 16:15

We don’t watch anything other than sport and the news live unless we happen to turn over and catch something else on I suppose. Anything not on BBC and we record and watch 15 minutes behind so we can FWD through the ad breaks.

SockQueen · 03/03/2021 16:20

Barely ever watch live TV now. When we use to visit my parents, who don't have a smart TV, DS couldn't understand why he couldn't choose what was on cbeebies. He has even only used a DVD once or twice, we watch everything on demand.

Caspianberg · 03/03/2021 16:31

Never. Haven’t for about 10-12 years.
Firstly overseas work before Netflix etc became popular meant we got out of the habit of any tv as none was in English.
Back in England tv on demand gradually became popular, and we had little time to watch stuff with work so was handy to just be able to catch up with series on the weekend.
Again, now overseas. Live tv ‘foreign’. Have Netflix etc if we want a film. Baby now means little free tv time, so better to catch up when he’s asleep than trying to watch live

heymammy · 03/03/2021 16:53

I watch the news live every work day for about 15/20 minutes, occasionally watch parts of Sunday brunch and the rugby.

Ds watches BBC bitesize for half an hour on school mornings.

Everything else is watched on Netflix/amazon prime

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/03/2021 19:07

@Caspianberg I think it was the four years overseas that caused us to prefer catch-up and streaming. We either used a VPN or waited until we were in the UK for a lot of things.
