WiFi washing machine - why?

I’m looking at buying a washing machine and a lot of them have WiFi, an app and/or can be controlled via Alexa.

Why?

I have to physically be at the machine to put the clothes etc in, so it is really easy to push the start button! I also can’t see myself checking on the app where in the wash cycle it is, quite happy just waiting for the beep at the end, or as is more usual spotting it has finished when I wander past.

Does anyone have a WiFi washing machine? Am I missing something marvellous that it does?

Any other appliances that you are puzzled by their connectivity?

I have a washer-dryer with an app, so it's handy to be able to switch it to drying mode without being there.

I wouldn't have paid extra for this feature though! I didn't even realise it was connective until months after we'd had it installed.

I dont have one but actually it would be useful for me.

I dont have a wash basket and put the clothes straight into the washing machine, but dont turn it on for a couple of days until the washing machine is full enough for a wash.

I'd turn it on through an app right now if I had it.

I've got WiFi on mine, never used it and never even looked into how it works. I chose it for the 10kg drum and wifi was just an extra odd thing that came with it lol

We just bought one (recently moved from furnished to unfurnished) as it was one of the cheapest ones on the website! We've never used it yet, but tech-mad DP can't wait. I think he's most excited about seeing how long the cycle has left if we're out 😂

Our washing machine and dryer is in the garage and when we upgrade Wer getting ones with WiFi to track when it's finished etc it'll be a godsend to us.

My tumble dryer is WiFi connected. I don’t use it as I would never set an appliance to activate if I wasn’t at home because of a potential fire hazard. Might be an old fashioned view but I’ve attended fire fatalities due to cookers, dryers, fires, etc being on when unattended.

I wondered this when we had to get a new one last year! As we are in a global pandemic and stuck wfh I literally don’t leave the house so that makes it even more superfluous.

In other news I can inform you my old direct drive LG machine was noticeably quieter spinning than my new ‘totally equivalent’ direct drive Samsung I replaced it with.
The Samsung plays a marginally longer unnecessary song at the end.
I miss the LG (the quieter spinning)

But surely you have to go to the machine to put the last item in, properly close the door, put in detergent etc...

Glad it isn’t me. Looking on ao.com and it is high up the features list and I’m struggling to see why I would want it!

I use mine so I don’t have to traipse to the laundry room in the basement to check if the wash is done, only to have to traipse upstairs again if it’s still going.

Mine sends me a notification when the wash cycle finishes. If you're the kind of person, like me, who puts a wash on and then has to rewash it the next day because you forgot to take it out, it's quite handy.

@Bzzzzzbumblebee if DC are the last ones to put clothes in (like today with DS school uniform) then he is the one that puts the last of the clothes in and closes the door, so the only stumbling block would be the detergent. DS is 7 so I dont trust him to put in the detergent and put it on the right setting yet.

I know, both my new washer dryer & dishwasher are wi-fi enabled, I can’t think why I will ever need this feature either.

Our dryer has wi-fi and an app. I keep meaning to download it as apparently it tells you something about which mode is more efficient for your load, to be honest I shove it in and stick it on mix and dry normally although it does have a woul and duvet settings which i use occasionally. I wouldnt have paid extra for it i chose it for its reviews and energy rating.

It would be useful for me if it would send me an alert (preferably with a snooze function lol!) to say it is done. Mines in the garage and I can't hear it beep so (if I remember) I have to set a separate timer.

I also have ADHD so there's a lot of forgetting about washing and rewashing that goes in in this house with the current set up. If the app helped with that it would be very useful. It would HAVE to have both an alarm and a snooze for it to work for me though.

Perhaps it's so that in the future they can be turned off remotely by the energy company in time of high demand? Not even sure how that would work....

My much loved LG broke after 10 years. Went to replace it with another LG but the prices seem to have gone through the roof.

I miss my LG too!!

One of my neighbours must have a WiFi tumble because when I go to log onto my internet I am offered ‘Samsung dryer’ as an option to connect to😁
