I suit my hair down much better than up - but it's flat and greasy looking after a day.

Are their any hairstyles you'd recommend that could suit me but hide the flat/greasiness a little? (My hair is long and very straight even if I try for it to be not straight)

Or do I just need to accept it's either daily washing or dry shampoo or tying it back?

Have you tried a Babyliss big hair or similar?

ZombeaArthur · 02/03/2021 11:23

I have the Babyliss Big hair and it really does add volume and, for me at least, it lasts all day. I’ve also recently started using John Frieda 7 day volume which seems to be making a difference.

NeedToGetOuttaHere · 02/03/2021 11:26

Do you touch your hair much, I find leaving it alone makes a big difference.
How about a bit of dry shampoo and then styling it how you usually would?

I have similar hair and I found the two things that helped are

  1. highlights (I am dark blonde anyway so lighter blonde highlights)

  2. age

both these have made my hair drier and less oily. Age obviously you can’t do much about!

I would also consider a fringe, I find my hair’s flatness is much more obvious when I have it in a single straight parting (just hangs limp either side of my face) so a fringe helps avoid this.

SmileyClare · 02/03/2021 11:32

My hair needs daily washing, I've just resigned myself to that and get up a bit earlier to do it! It might be easier to have yours cut a bit shorter to make washing it less of a chore?

Try clear detoxing or clarifying shampoos if it's prone to greasiness and only put conditioner on the mid lengths and ends. Also blast your hair with very cold water after washing if you can bear it. Those things work for me.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 02/03/2021 11:38

I use hairgrips to pin back the front sections.
It means there isn’t hair on my face so I’m not touching it, and it does disguise the greasier front sections a bit.

Also dry shampoo.. a lot of people apply it wrong. Spray it on the roots and then rub it all out with your fingers, don’t just spray and leave.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 02/03/2021 11:43

What shampoo are you using? I used to use one that was actually making my hair worse!

Could you try using hair soap then a bit of shampoo to give it a bit of shine before final rinse? I find the soap cleans out all the shampoo residue as well as city grime.

JackieeWeaver · 02/03/2021 11:52

An old manager of mine swore her lovely voluminous hair was a result of blow drying it with her head turned upside down. It works for me when I've tried it and I have similar hair problems to you. Also I occasionally rub a handful of talc through my roots before bed (I'm blonde so it's subtle), this seems to strip some of the oil and get me an additional day without washing.

ZombeaArthur · 02/03/2021 12:01

I also use conditioner first, then shampoo twice, which removes more of the conditioner and doesn’t weigh my hair down as much.

TheSpottedZebra · 02/03/2021 12:03

Just wash it every day! Some hair just likes more frequent washing.

QueenofallNorway · 02/03/2021 12:22

My hair is like this and I just wash every day. I’ve tried all sorts over the years and while certain things keep the greasiness at bay during the day, it always needs a wash the following day. I’m resigned to it now.

Carycy · 02/03/2021 12:48

Exactly the same type of hair. Long, shiny, straight, sometimes flat to head by the end of the day and greasy by the next. I wear up on the second day if I don’t have time to wash.
If I washed very late the day before I can sometimes get always with it down with dry shampoo. Quite like the aveda shampure one which is like a talk as opposed to a spray and smells less artificial than a lot of them.
I find half up half down hairstyles can make me feel like I have made a bit more of an effort and still pretty than just the usual mum bun/ pony tail.
I would also work on ways of increasing your drying time so it’s less of a chore. My saving grace is my hair doesn’t need much styling to look nice as it’s so straight. So I have two, yes two, professional standard hairdryers on the go, A diva and a dyson currently, ( parlux is also good.), stick my head upside down and blast away with both. Or blow dry with the Revlon one step and hair dryer at the same time.

DottyDotAgain · 02/03/2021 12:51

Yep - my hair's exactly like this... I use a bit of dry shampoo on day two and then sometimes pin up one side with a slide (am obsessed with Inky and Mole hair slides at the moment!), or take back both sides with a hair clip, but leave the rest down. My face is too fat to cope with all my hair up, so a halfway solution seems to be the best on day two.

Juliancoped · 02/03/2021 12:52

use heated rollers? they give my hair lots of oompf

CuriousaboutSamphire · 02/03/2021 12:56

Having tried different shampoos (Head and Shoulders wasn't bad, but I don't like the smell), I settled on Batiste dry shampoo.

PleaseStopExplaining · 02/03/2021 12:59

I find my day two hair is better if it’s been tied back over night. I always sleep on the same side so I tie it on the other.

SilverGlassHare · 02/03/2021 13:11

I just wash mine every morning when I have a shower. It's a bit of a pain but I prefer it to dry shampoo or tying my hair up.

Justtryingtobehelpful · 02/03/2021 20:37

Use this on your hair. Give it a good scrub. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B077PQB2HC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_YWQ0B1G044XHPWHY2AER?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Don't touch your hair too much. Flip your hair over and put product on getting the back. I'm curly so I tend to sin for 1 or two washes per week. Wait it out, your hair gets used to less washing.

Wellthisisallfuckingmarvellous · 02/03/2021 21:33

My hairdresser told me once every few weeks to wash your hair with fairy liquid to strip out all thw grease!

My hair is a nightmare though and it’s always greasy at the back. I don’t touch it but always looks the same. I don’t bother with conditioner anymore and always try to buy different shampoos to mix it up nothing works.

I think that's good advice (to strip the hair of build up). I don't use fairy liquid but any decent clarifying shampoo does the job. I use Vosene Original once a week, it's brilliant at removing any oil or silicone build up which makes fine hair limp and flat. I used to get an odd greasy patch and Vosene fixed that so maybe worth a try?

The upside of having oily hair is that it's always shiny and in good condition so a silver lining there!

DottyDotAgain · 05/03/2021 11:01

Ooh - also a definite yes to tying it up at night - also helps with night sweats.... and I use Batiste dry shampoo too - the best I've found.

Horsemad · 05/03/2021 11:43

What about that Elvive Clay shampoo?

I used it when my hair started being greasy at the roots very quickly (mad hormonal phase) and it was great.
