Here's one I've bravely captured alive instead of hoovering. Getting about 2-3 a day and they're not all the same. What's going on - please help !!

Do you bring firewood into the house?

tootyfruitypickle · 02/03/2021 07:46

I suddenly had a panic they were cockroaches - but I have seen one before and it wasn't like this and was massive. But I'm not happy with the numbers of beetles I'm getting , found one in a mug as well this morning. Definitely seems to be an infestation ConfusedShock

I get these at certain time of the year. We find a few a day for a week and then they go. We live next to countryside and think they are vine weevils. I’ve lived here for 7 years and they only come literally once a year so it’s def not an infestation for me.

tootyfruitypickle · 02/03/2021 07:46

Yes we have firewood. Do you think they're just from there and if I remove the wood they'll go?

tootyfruitypickle · 02/03/2021 07:47

Yes I just looked that one is definitely a vine weevil!

I can take wood out and just bring it in on the day I want to burn . If I do massive hoover will that solve the problem or will these vine weevils take over ?!

OP posts:
LubaLuca · 02/03/2021 07:50

It's possible some of the wood is infested, yes. The only time we've had beetles in the house was when they came in in logs.

Iwishihadariver · 02/03/2021 08:01

Can I be the first to suggest John, Paul, George & Ringo and names ?

tootyfruitypickle · 02/03/2021 08:01

We've just found another 3 and hoovered them up. I have lots of house plants , will they be infested ? If if change the compost today won't they just get reinfested

Not coping ....!

Yes, they're vine weevils. They are harmless, they don't bite and they are not 'dirty' like cockroaches, they won't eat food waste.

They normally live outside, especially if you have plants in tubs outside. They could have come in on the wood but they are more likely to have taken up residence in your pot plants. They tend to lay eggs in the soil amongst the roots and therefore can be hard to get rid of once they get established. You will find they damage the leaves of the pot plants if left unchecked although if you spray everything with a chemical insect spray (take the plants outside to do this) it provides a leaf coating which the weevils don't like. You'll have to top it up every 6 weeks though.

Weevils have very hard body casings and don't die very easily, so if you are hoovering them up they may eventually walk out of the vacuum cleaner once they find their way out. But honestly, they are harmless unless you are a plant!

tootyfruitypickle · 02/03/2021 08:23

Yikes I'm emptying the hoover bag !

Thank you. A quick google has show that one of the plants I have (two of ) mother in laws tongue is susceptible to this. I think I will put them outside for now and treat with a vine weevil insecticide ?

OP posts:
tootyfruitypickle · 02/03/2021 08:27

Also I brought a fuschia inside to overwinter and looks like that is a favourite !

I've got some really tender houseplants that I can't really stick outside but the fuschia and mother in laws tongue are going out !

Stickytreacle · 02/03/2021 08:54

They'll have just come in after a hard days night and working like a dog. Grin

CokeAndPepsi · 02/03/2021 09:48

It’s the time of year. Here comes the sun and then they appear.

tootyfruitypickle · 02/03/2021 17:40

So, I've treated all the house plants. Thrown away an amaryllis which had grubs all over the roots (yuck) and I think those were ones hatching ! .

A massive plant I have has literally zillions of yellow eggs in its soil I don't think the vine weevil killer will be enough- are so many! I've put it outside for now. Not sure if I should carry on treating jt outside or just throw it ? (sob) also worried leaving jt outside might mean if my containers in patio aren't infested they will be ! I'll decide tomorrow , I can't bear to at the mo!

Another plant has little white dots in soil which dd says are eggs but I can't find what they are, research shows vine weevil only have yellow eggs. Thats come back in but will keep checking jt .My mother in laws tongue looks fine which is odd. I'll treat all those ones again in 8 weeks

The yellow eggs are foul actually.

I've got some plants in the bedrooms I'll have to check tomorrow

Anyone had this in their house plants and can advise ?!!
