On the back of the "mother disapproval" thread....

My mother now happily sits back and watches my father do the ironing, cooking and most of the cleaning. Since he retired due to medical reasons he got bored. She wouldnt let him do the housework as that was her job. Then when I pointed out that I hadnt ironed a shirt ever and my husband had somehow managed. Now she has embraced a life of leisure and Pa is happy as he has stuff to do!

Also, not giving a shiney shite about what people think of what she is wearing. And lying in as long as she likes. For the first 2 years of her retirement she set her alarms as if she was still at work, now she usually gets up mid morning as is sometimes dressed by lunchtime. This was after my sister and I both asked why she bothered to retire if she wasnt going to take it easy.

Dont get me wrong, she still keeps busy but doesnt feel any guilt like she used to if she has a lazy day.

Oh and having a drink more than once very small sherry once a week. She will now have a glass of wine if she fancies it because she has realised that it doesnt turn you into a lush!

Not my mum but my MIL can now throw a teabag straight in the bin after years of believing it would somehow set the bin on fire.

It was only after seeing me do it that she realise how daft she’d been. Grin

My mum has sadly died but the one place she never wanted to go was Disneyland Paris. I won a competition to go there and forced her to go. I had to drag her away and she went back several times over the years and had her 80th birthday there.

Dress in bright, colourful and bold clothes. I was a hippy as a teenager and wore rainbow tie dye, flowing skirts with bells on, etc. She later on said it gave her the push to dress how she'd always wanted to, and she found her own signature style.

I love this.

My mum speaks her mind more - she has realised she doesn't have to 'be nice' all the time.
