Help me dress a grown man

Dh is 47. I do not normally dress him and he is by far the more naturally vain of the two of us. When we met 20 years ago a while back he wore smart jeans and branded tshirts as casual wear. Very clean skate trainers. That sort of thing.

We had too many children in a very short time around a decade ago. During that time we had no money for things we actually like and also didn't leave the house for fun so spent less money on going out clothes.

We have realised that Dh has been wearing the same dissolving clothes for a decade because unlike me he has not changed shape in twenty years.

For a long time, he despaired that elasticated skinny jeans became acceptable for men, even 6 '3 men with bulky thighs like him. So he refused to buy jeans.

He does not know what to wear now, The clothes he enjoyed in the 90s are now finally back but he is sadly, too old to wear them. Grin Poor bastard.

He needs casual clothes, and he also could do with some workwear. He works in management in a casual office environment where he has got in the habit of skanky plain tshirts that he wears in a rota of 5 colours. The occasional polo.

I can't help him as I haven't got a fucking clue. I feel bad for him because he always tried to look smart and I feel like his shabbiness is indicative of his feeling a like there isn't any point in trying anymore. Sad I was always a lazy shabby fucker and could often be found wearing a work fleece in my downtime Grin

We don't have lots of money but he has had a little pay raise recently and I think we can get him a small wardrobe going that will make him feel good about himself.

He needs shoes and clothes. Casual wear and stuff for work. He is 47, 6 '3 and wears a L/Xl shirt.

Where do your similar menfolk do their shopping?

For casual: can't go wrong with a pair of Levis 501s in a dark colour IMO. Rapanui do good t-shirts. Finisterre also worth a look.
Not sure about smarter work wear tho.

Oh thank you! Good shout on the jeans actually. I checked out Rapanui and they might not be DH but I quite the look of them being a bit of a hippy myself. Finisterre made me choke on my gum when I saw the cost of shirt though. Grin

Rapanui do great plain t-shirts so suitable for any taste.
What's your budget roughly?

SimonJT · 01/03/2021 17:53

What body type does he have? That makes a huge difference on the type of clothes that will fit well.

Callingallbutterflies · 01/03/2021 18:09

My husband is 48. 6ft ish. Slim body. Wears a medium shirt. Agree about the Levi 501s in dark blue. Levis occasionally have a discount code.

Other trousers for casual office are Spoke or Charles Tyrwhitt. All his work shirts, suits and blazer are CT too. Not that cheap though!

TK Maxx is good for interesting tshirts. H & M for plain tshirts and slim fitting jumpers and most other things actually. He loves a fleece for home though... The dreaded fleece...

Man here.

Yep. That's what I've been wearing for the past 30+ years. And they LAST.

(Though I would get more than one pair obviously. They get a bit crusty after a few weeks. Grin)

LadyCounterblast · 01/03/2021 18:17

Asket or Spoke for trousers
Reiss for other bits

LadyCounterblast · 01/03/2021 18:17

Asket chinos particularly are brilliant -- DH has about six pairs. And they're tough, really well made.

merryhouse · 01/03/2021 19:05

My husband (53) likes a lot of Joe Brown's shirts (with the caveat that apparently MN considers JB to be frumpy Grin). He would wear them for work - management in a casual office environment. He's had some gorgeous jackets from there too.

H is awkward size-wise so hasn't ever bought trousers from JB but they do plenty, both casual and suit-type.

Have you stolen my DH Hmm

DH bought himself a couple of long sleeved merino t-shirts which he wears as a jumper. Levi’s, also 501 I think, both for casual and in the office.

Jeans, I guess we will spend what needs spending. Tshirts I am thinking under £30 each if that's reasonable.

Shoes Up to 60 for casual?

What body type does he have? That makes a huge difference on the type of clothes that will fit well.

Um, I think he weighs about about 16 stone? He isn't fat but he's got a bit of a beer belly. Not huge mind you, but he can see it and is a bit un happy with it. Arms he is working on.

Ooh I am partial to a man in chinos. Thank you, I'll have a look.

He's just said 501s don't fit his leg properly, he can't get them over his thighs. Hmm They seem to have a bit of elastic in them though now since he last tried them on (this was years ago, I reckon) so I might get him to try some on when shops reopen.

Have you stolen my DH hmm

God, I hope not. To think the same crusty five tops were getting twice the wearing! Grin Do you actually mean wool tshirts? sorry if I am being dim, I really am clueless.

Are Jb's frumpy? Sad I like the women's stuff. I've never really looked at the men's though!

Also TSHIRTS MUST NEVER HAVE POCKETS

This would be very silly indeed Hmm Confused

Not silly at all if you wear glasses. I love T-shirts with a pocket for precisely that reason.

Anyway, back to your original question. I'm just a few years older than your husband, also male and 6'3". Jeans are easy - Levis till I die. As to the rest, has he had a look at SuperDry? Some of their stuff is garishly overbranded but they have a lot that isn't and the quality and styling is generally good. Sizes can be a bit on the small side so go up a size at least if buying online.

HeartOfInk · 01/03/2021 20:20

TSHIRTS MUST NEVER HAVE POCKETS
Looking even more suspicious. What colour are they? Grin
(Grey, grey, maroon, dark green, grey and a couple of dark brown polos)
Yes, he has a couple of woolen T-shirt's from icebreaker.

He wears glasses! He just has a thing about pockets. Like one stole his lunch money in school or something.

I haven't really looked at SuperDry as I tend to associate it with the very brand type branding but I'll check it out as that's good to know they've got other stuff too. And thanks for the tip on sizing!

It was funny, but now I'm concerned. Grin Though think Dh has a beige in there too. Hmm
