Im just in the process of leaving the Army after 14 years. Ive applied for a handful of jobs, and have an interview for one of them this thursday. The others arent closing until later this month so im not expecting to hear anything from them just yet. I cannot shake this feeling that nobody would employ me because theres always going to be someone else thats got more experience in civilian life thats more employable. Ive got professional qualificstions, post grad qualifications and experience but I just cant shake the mind set. Anyone got any tips with dealing with it? I think if I carry on thinking like this it'll show during interviews

I’m starting a new job soon and I’m terrified about it, so I’ve just started reading a book called The Imposter Cure. I’ve spent most of my career feeling like I’m not good enough and I’m sick of it! I’m hoping it will help me to develop a bit more self confidence.

If I were you, I’d try to think of all the skills you have from the army which will transfer well into the roles you’re interviewing for. Also, depending on the job you could have a look at some common interview questions e.g.

  • Tell me about a time when you worked successfully in a team
  • Tell me about how you deal with stressful situations
  • Tell me about how you handled something when it didn’t go to plan

Think about some of these questions and come up with answers in a STAR format.

Good luck with the interview!

I have had imposter syndrome since I started work. They haven't rumbled me yet and I'm retiring soon. Grin
