What’s the normal amount of medication given on a repeat prescription

I’ve just started a new medication that will be on repeat dispensing. I’ve been given one months supply. I remember when I was on medication in the past I was given two months has this been changed to save money? Friend of mine told me it’s more common to given fortnightly or monthly now due to medication wastage. Is this the case?

My Dr prescribes 6 months at a time, but they are kept on hold in local pharmacy and I pick up 8 weeks at a time.

Mine (multiple, very long term) are monthly.

28 days here for lifelong medication and they wont budge on it.

My pharmacy now test me when my medication is in and I try and they will only reorder 28 days from when you pick it up, so I try and collect it straight away

One month at a time here, or 28 days if the meds come as a pop pack.

Our CCG policy is 28 days only, we occasionally get some for 56 days but it’s rare, I’d say 99% of patients get a month at a time.
If it’s a stable medication that’s unlikely to change lots of prescriptions these days are issued batch prescriptions where the surgery issue up to a years supply at a time but they are given to the patient on a monthly basis.

Only ever been given 28 days worth.

It’s 28 days for mine except the prn ones. An annual prepay certificate is £10.50ish for 10 months so is cheaper than paying ad hoc if you have a regular medication.

2 monthly and the chemists deliver.

2 months for mins in Scotland, bug it's something I've been on consistently for years. When I've had other repeat prescriptions for painkillers they tend to be for 2 or 4 weeks worth.

28 days is standard here. It's to stop ppl stockpiling medication that they dont use.
It's also easier for a GP to notice if someone is needing "extras" of certain medications.

I have one repeat which is 28 days and another which is 84 days, however that one is a lifelong medication on a stable dose, whereas the 28 day is hopefully shorter term

I get enough for 8 weeks

Is this a medication which could be abused, and possibly previously has been?

No it’s medication for high blood pressure. Never been abused. I’ve been told today it’s a ccg rule that no one gets more than a months worth.

What's the underlying question? Is it 'how can I get a decent supply of xxxx so I don't run out?', or 'how can I get maximum amount of xxx for the least money?'

There may be ways your GP can help, and:or you can buy a prescription certificate etc.

Most CCGs won't let you have more than a month.

If you are on several prescriptions a pre-payment certificate is great value for money.

If I ask for everything at once I make all my money back on pre-payment certificate in one month for the whole year.

I get two months of thyroxin at a time.

I don't know if it varies by regions-I get my blood pressure medicines for 3 months at a time.
