What kind do you have and what do you use it for?

I think I'm going to get one Smile Never too late to be a yuppy!

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 01/03/2021 18:15

I have a personal organiser one. Much prefer writing things down than putting on my phone. I use it to plan my life basically. On a day to day basis I have my tasks for the day. I then have lists for my more long term tasks. Keep all appointments etc in it as well. I could definitely use it more and plan to once I am back out and about.

Oblomov21 · 02/03/2021 07:08

Actually, I too write things down and take notes and have a number of pads, files, and post it notes that I too scribble things down on.

So anyone complaining re my previous post is being unfair. Many people write all sorts of things down. I do too.

But. That is not what a Filofax is. Not what this post was about. It is a big thing, quite cumbersome, and was revolutionary back in the day.

But has become largely obsolete with the progression of technology.

Oblomov21 · 02/03/2021 07:11

Apart from addresses it has personal info about medical items, prescriptions, recipes, technical stuff about hobbies , instructions on how to troubleshoot or operate various items, passport no. ,insurance details and contacts, etc etc. I use it for shopping and present lists, travel and events details, parking codes, to do lists, foreign language vocabulary,MOT car servicing, and other recurrent dates. So many useful bits of info always readily to hand.

All of that information I store on my phone. So easily accessible. Plus, Which is backed up, so could be accessed by any computer should I lose phone.

What about if you lose said Filofax. Do you too have a copy of all these important documents and bits of info?

Oblomov21 · 02/03/2021 07:12

For contact details, birthdays and the kids log ins for various things.

That too is stored on my phone. Using notes largely.

LongIslandIcedT · 02/03/2021 07:15

I've just gone back to mine since WFH, easier to organise work stuff in one place rather than loads of different notebooks. I use it as a diary, shopping and to do list as well but I use my phone for a lot of things now.

Allthatfancy thinks my post is odd?

I too don't sync with a partner, or a business. But my point was is that you can now.

How is it odd. My viewpoint that a Filofax is obsolete by technological development since the 80's?

It's not obsolete though is it, because people still use it, which is clear from this thread!

I have an A5 leather Filofax and absolutely love it. I use it mainly for work and love having a paper diary, somewhere for written notes, to do lists to cross off etc. Yes I have an outlook diary but I have always used a paper one too and it's great not having to log on to find out what I'm doing next week for example. I understand that some of you say you feel they're obsolete now but I couldn't disagree more...I wouldn't want to be without mine.

FredSoftly · 02/03/2021 07:28

Oblomov - I think some of us are puzzled by your inability to appreciate some people just prefer to do something a different way.

Filofax has been around since 1930 and until the 80s was a niche product only stocked in Harrods (if my memory serves me right). Then the yuppies discovered them and they were very popular. Now they are niche again.

LucyLatimer · 02/03/2021 07:35

I had one for Christmas. It's a5 and I keep it on my desk for notes and a loose leaf dodo pad diary

Pyewackect · 02/03/2021 07:43

Yes, had one for years. Leather bound A5 I write down my off duty. I record details of each working shift in my own short hand. Medical complications and changes of procedure. I use it for project planning. Staff training and my personal thoughts and feelings while fighting a global pandemic. I find things stick in my mind if I write them down on paper. I can then flick back to track info and see how I’m coping. It’s easier to visually share data and trends quickly. Phone is too small and fiddly to use as I use my FX. Personal stuff is all written in French.

Weaverspin · 02/03/2021 07:48

Yes, I have an A5 leather one and have done for the past 30 years! I just like viewing my appointments and plans that way - I find the information easier to take in at a glance. I don’t carry it about with me. I do have an iPhone, but I’ve never got on with its calendar. I use the reminders and alarms though.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 02/03/2021 07:49

I do. I prefer to see things written down than scrolling through my phone.

inappropriateraspberry · 02/03/2021 07:53

I recently bought one! I've always liked having a diary in my bag, I don't use the calendar on my phone. It's a lovely smallish Filofax and I can keep track of birthdays, appts etc. I don't always have it in my bag, it usually lives on my bedside table or in the car.

inappropriateraspberry · 02/03/2021 07:54

Also use it for Xmas lists/to dos/packing lists etc.

I don't have that inability. I totally recognise that many people like things others don't. Hmm
