What about carers/grandparents? Parents 2 get free covid tests school children

Just read this.

www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/families-kids-school-free-covid-23578374

Perents of children at school to get 2 free covid tests a week. I will believe that when i see it.

What about grandparents that look after some children before/after school etc?

My parents are 59 and 60 respectively they won't get the jabs until at least a few weeks.

With kids back at school the mass breakout of covid may not take place not due to planning by the government but the warmer weather we are expecting.

Many grandparents are worried as are the vulnerable that have not yet had their vaccines. Don't forget that the AstrZeneca does not really start to work unti 4 weeks down the road. So we are looking at least 2/3 months before children should really return to school.

Where we live the children in the nursery were sitting shoulder to shouler before they locked down.

If the grandparents are young enough not to have been vaccinated yet, they are young enough not to have a high level of vulnerability. For the vast majority of people, Covid is a very mild illness.

You can get tests for all those in a childcare bubble if you want to.

If you still aren't happy with the level of risk, you need to either find alternative childcare for the next few weeks, or keep your children at home.

Do not expect other people's children to suffer a continued lack of social contact and disrupted education because you aren't happy with your individual situation.

CMOTDibbler · 05/03/2021 15:20

Grandparents who provide care can order the tests online, or pick them up at an asymptomatic testing centre. It just asks if you have school aged children in your household or bubble.
I ordered tests on Wednesday and they were delivered on Thursday, so very efficient

edwinbear · 05/03/2021 15:50

IMO schools should have stayed closed for a few more weeks until all those in the first group had their jab that wanted it and a few weeks on that and then cut short the summer hols to 1 week. Most parents would agree with that

I wouldn't agree with that, no. And I know of no other parents who would either. Childcare support bubbles can collect or have delivered LFT's, I had some delivered yesterday. Children need to get back to school, if your parents are worried, find alternative childcare.

I ordered mine for delivery (as I am CEV and cannot collect) They’ve arrived, and there are plenty of posts on other threads about people who have successfully collected from test centres

So yes, believe it

Also, you might have benefited from checking terms of scheme - it covers bubbles

I don’t know ANY parents who would agree with that. As a parent AND a school worker I can assure that I will NOT cancel our booked two weeks holiday (in England). I am paid for 39 weeks per year only. I worked 42 weeks AND two bank holidays last school year with no extra pay - I’m not doing it again this year.

Well I saw it today! Went to pick up tests for DH and DS (families of school workers can get them) and there were plenty of test packs being given out to parents.

not talking re parents mate I'm talking re older/vulnerable people who adult children work and are the carers for the children when taking them to school and return.

Btw, just because you do not know of any parents, I'll counter that with the fat that I do.

If they are the carers for children when taking them to school, they are entitled to tests. As has been explained multiple times on this thread.

Nope op, 'most' parents are very pleased their kids are going back on Monday. In fact, every single parent I've spoken to is.

No thank you to keeping 8 million children off any longer for those minority of unvaccinated grandparents whose parents can't take leave.

Brunt0n · 05/03/2021 20:27

Schools should stay shut for another 4-5 weeks because you can’t be arsed to pay for childcare? Sure

Nellythemouse · 05/03/2021 20:52

So all non vulnerable/keyworker children should do without education and socialisation and many parents without the childcare that school provides, because it suits you personally to have your kids at home because you have grandparents on tap? And you think that despite clearly not being high up the vaccine list, and case numbers dropping like a stone, it’s too risky for them? And on top of that, to minimise any inconvenience to you, schools should rearrange the summer holidays?

No. How incredibly selfish. If you’re that worried, find alternative childcare. Give up your job. Plenty of other parents have had to over the last year, precisely because schools have been closed. Or give up your school place. Plenty of people don’t have grandparent babysitters and still manage to work.

Read the thread buddy and then respond as you have got it so wrong. You may be on the wrong thread as this is not the scenario i ref to.

Grandparents as part of a childcare bubble are entitled to the tests too but tbh there is a level of personal responsibility at play here too. If you are worried about your own parents why not swap around your own arrangements? Don't use them as childcare if they are going to school (and you're worried) seems quite simple to me!!

Emma2021 · 05/03/2021 21:04

so you rather see vulnerable grandparents become sick or worse. I'm glad that older people have a bigger say than before and several i know wont be sending their kids to school until their carers have been vaccinated and/or had the jabs for at least 4 weeks .

To put peoples lives at risk at this late stage when we have the jabs etc is only done so to gain political popularirty. EG you lot recall jut after the xmas break millions of kids back to school for one day - just guess how many people that made sick for life and sadly the thousands that died possibly becuse of them going to school and then spreading the virus.

I think some of the doom-mongers are starting to lose the plot a bit as things return slowly to normal.

No parents I know want their kids to be off any longer. If you have personal circumstances that mean your children can’t return to school then work that out with their headteacher. Don’t try to assume ‘most parents’ agree with you.

Nellythemouse · 05/03/2021 21:10

No, you are putting their lives at risk by using them for childcare. That’s on you. By all means keep your children home. But leave mine out of it.

No, you are wanting me to leav kids with people we don't know that may buse kids or have you not heard or seen some so-called carers how they nefglect kids. You may want to leave kids with people you dont know and I'm assuming you work for a living but we wont. our parents did not leave us with strangers nor will we or our family.

Nellythemouse · 05/03/2021 21:17

Let me put it a different way. If the choice is “people can use grandparents for childcare” or “schools can open” I vote schools open.

OverTheRubicon · 05/03/2021 21:17

@BendingSpoons

It's for primary school parents. The secondary pupils are being tested themselves but in primary they will apparently offer tests to parents.

The tests pick up if you have COVID. If you want to keep grandparents safe, then the best you can do (other than not seeing them) is to test regularly and then isolate if positive. A grandparent testing won't protect them, as if they test positive, it's too late. They may however offer tests to grandparents to protect others, as they (and your children) will have to self isolate if it's positive.

This.
OverTheRubicon · 05/03/2021 21:20

@Emma2021 not all of us are lucky enough to have family around or able or willing to care for our children. Should we not work?

I'd felt some sympathy until your last post. If you are choosing to send children to grandparents because you feel that the rest of us don't care about sending our kids off to.abusers, then good luck to you, and it's on your head, frankly, if you make them ill.

Nellythemouse · 05/03/2021 21:20

Oh for goodness sakes. First you’re too good to rent somewhere to live. Now your kids are too precious to be cared for by anyone outside your family? Give over.

arethereanyleftatall · 05/03/2021 21:21

Lol, your last post is literally batshit op. 😂😂

Brunt0n · 05/03/2021 21:24

If you don’t want to send your kids back to school on Monday, then don’t!

Your servants parents will raise them look after them while you work 👍

Does the fact that multiple people are telling you you’re being unreasonable not mean anything to you?

pilotsprincess · 05/03/2021 21:33

Bat shit crazy😂
