Why would I need WiFi connection on an oven?

Looking to replace my oven. I've narrowed it down to 4 and two are "WiFi enabled, Remote control and monitoring".

I am at loss to know why an oven needs to be connected to WiFi. I'd have to be in front of it to put any food in it and you'd not leave an oven running if you weren't at home. So...what am I missing?

Smart ovens enable control via your phone. It's just another thing that you can control without shifting your ass off the sofa 😂

Some things are a step too far, aren’t they?

You can turn the timer on from the other room. You can set it to come on when you're doing something else. I think I'd quite like it.

I quite often set the timer (not using WiFi sadly) to cook something whilst we are all out walking on a Sunday afternoon, so that dinner is ready when we get home. It's designed with that function so I'd imagine it's safe. My mum always used to cook the Sunday roast whilst she was at church, so that everyone came home to dinner nearly ready.

so you can put it on to warm up on your journey home so its ready to put food in for dinner straight away?

I always put the food in the oven, programme it, and leave the house. What’s not to like in modern technology?

Anyonebut · 28/02/2021 08:26

Some ovens have a camera inside, so you can check on your roast dinner from your phone!

EventuallyDeleted · 28/02/2021 08:30

Ovens I can understand but our washing machine is wifi enabled and you definitely aren't meant to run those unattended.

Modern ovens take less than five minutes to come to temperature, not that I ever bother waiting.

If you switch the oven on as you start preparing the food, even if that involves nothing more than getting something out of the freezer, finding a baking tray and putting the food on it, it's just about there anyway.

My top mass energy saving tip would be to stop putting 'preheat the oven' as the first instruction on any recipe as it's simply not necessary any more.

I want to know why a kettle would need WiFi. You still have to put water in it to use it.

DB's washing machine has WiFi. Tells you when the washing's finished. Grin

I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords.

Finfintytint · 28/02/2021 08:33

My tumble dryer has WiFi but I wouldn’t leave it unattended anyway so I don’t use it. DH mucks about with it though because of the novelty factor.

Yes! I have been thinking this for a while now. I can't believe so many recipes state this, especially at the beginning of a recipe that takes 45 minutes to prepare.

I personally think we’d be crazy as a nation to get all these essential items in the home WiFi enabled. Fridges, cookers, washing machines, toasters etc. They’ll need constant updating, become out of date really quickly and what if your wifi drops out a lot like mine does. Just seems another source of stress to me and complicates life. I prefer to just plug in and it works!

I live in an open plan flat so my sofa is in the same room!

I've never cooked a roast and have no intention of ever doing so. That's DH's job and he can use the bbq outside. Not make my oven messy! I mainly use it for cakes and pizza Grin

I have a wi-fi enabled dishwasher. Why? I can't see the point. Truly baffling to me too OP

Same with tumble dryers!
SergeiL · 28/02/2021 08:53

I have a wifi enabled washing machine. I didn’t know this until it went wrong. I was able to get an app, which the washing machine connected to, to tell me what was wrong with it. But I still needed a real life person to come and fix it!

I’d be happier setting a wash cycle off than something potentially flammable.

I use the timer function on my washing machine, how is that different?

FlyingBurrito · 28/02/2021 08:56

Clearly you don't need it but lots of other people like to have it and the technology is available so why not offer it. Does every new oven nowadays have Wi-Fi, I'm guessing you can still buy one without.

BarbaraofSeville · 28/02/2021 09:04

What I want to know about WiFi connected fridges is do they have an internal webcam that you can use to answer the 'have we got any X' when you're in the supermarket and can't remember. Now that would be useful.

EventuallyDeleted · 28/02/2021 09:04

I have never used a timer on a washing machine either, we don't run it when we're not at home or overnight.

HeartOfInk · 28/02/2021 09:04

Well, yes. That's what I'm asking. Why do other people like to have it? Do you have it FlyingBurrito? Use it regularly?

No, other than the usual computer and phones I don't have any internet enabled devices but unless there are no other options I don't see it as an issue and even if all kitchen appliances have Wi-Fi this surely they have manual controls too

My dishwasher and oven have timers but I don't ever use them, the washing machine one however, I use quite often.

I've not bought an oven for years, do they all have Wi-Fi now?

BarbaraofSeville · 28/02/2021 10:02

I don't think all ovens have WiFi now, or other appliances. We've bought a microwave, oven and washing machine in the last few months and none of them have WiFi although I do remember seeing them as an option when searching, but I didn't list it as a criteria, because I tend to choose a low spec model from a 'good' brand and hope that it gets the basics right and lasts a long time rather than it being something a bit rubbishy with all the bells and whistles that has more to go wrong.

nopulp · 28/02/2021 10:23

Why can't you leave a washing machine running? I put mine on and go out all the time.
