Finally going to my GP about my anxiety, what to expect?

I've finally mustered up the courage to go to my GP about my anxiety. I'm pretty sure I have generalised anxiety as I worry about anything and everything. It's such an ingrained part of my personality and worldview that I'm not even sure how to describe it to my GP. I'm a little embarrassed at how badly I've let it get without going to the GP sooner.

Can I ask what your experiences are with going to the GP about anxiety? I would prefer to go on medication as I think that will help as I've tried self-help CBT-based stuff and haven't found it helpful.

Do I need a check-up before being prescribed the medication (e.g. blood pressure, heart rate, BMI?) or do you think they will just do a remote telephone appointment and prescribe it over the phone? I would prefer not to go to the GP surgery if possible as, ironically, I get really anxious going there, especially during COVID times.

Well done in finding the strength to go. I need to go myself.
When I went in the past I was first given Propranolol which is a beta blocker and is commonly given for anxiety as it helps the physical side effects.
I was later given Amitryptyline (spelling?) as it's an antidepressant amongst other things.

Neither worked for me at the time but I was very low and perhaps should've persevered.
They might want to see you or may prescribe over the phone. This might depend on your medical history.
Good luck, I hope you feel better soon
