Microchipping dog question

firsttimewoofy · 27/02/2021 16:25

Sorry, just a quick question. I'm due to pick up my puppy next week. I've just had a message from the breeder asking for my name and address for the microchipping.

Is that correct? I thought they had to microchip the puppy with their details and then I would change it over once I take it to the vet on my end.

TIA

You are correct. That is a legal requirement. The breeder must be recorded as the first owner... to reduce risk of puppy farming, dubious selling on etc.

You don’t have to take the puppy to the vets to change it. The breeder should give you the chip number and a code so you can change it yourself online. Your puppy should have already been checked over by a vet and given first jabs at 7 weeks. You can then take to your vet for second jabs at around 10-12 weeks presuming you’re picking up at 8weeks, which is usual.

Should I be suspicious that she's asking me for my name and address...?? Oh dear...

Breeder is supposed to be first registered keeper but maybe they are thinking ahead? Just ask them, might not be anything suspicious.

You must ensure the microchip database contact details are up to date (with the new keeper’s information) this should be updated either by yourself or the new keeper

Yes its a legal requirement for them to chip into their name.

With mine they are registered to me and then I provide a transfer code to the new owners. They would then access the chip companies website, register for an account and enter the code I have provided.

However surely they should have your name and address for the sale contract in any event so that wouldn't be a red flag for me. Not having any paperwork however would be ..

Maybe they’ve already done it in their nakeu and they’re asking your details to change it over.
My very reputable breeder changed it when I picked up the puppy.

firsttimewoofy · 27/02/2021 16:41

I have not been asked for any paperwork....

Oh dear, I think I've read so much I am now ultra suspicious even though I thought and she has seemed very good up till now.

I've just messaged and she said it will be her first and she will then transfer to me the day before I pick up.

A bit different as mine was a cat.

But when I bought my cat from a breeder, he was originally chipped in her name. But a few days before collection she changed all the details over into mine for me. We are going back about 8/9 years though.

I would have thought she'd of had all your details already? I had to sign contracts & things when I bought my cat. Maybe just ask? I wouldn't want to buy a puppy from just anywhere tbh.
