Ring doorbell

Our newish car has been scratched for third time last night and the neighbours each side cars was done two days ago. It's quite common in this street but hasn't happened for a while. Looks like it's been keyed.
We live in a walk through street and have no driveway although can usually park opposite our houses.
Thinking of investing in a ring doorbell (was thinking it would be handy before all this) but wondered if a Ring doorbell would show footage from approx 9 meters away?
Also Is it legal to record movement on a public pathway? I obviously won't be checking it all the time just if something happens i can look back at the record and see who is doing it.

Any kind of camera should only be on your property rather than on a public footpath.

As in focussing on your property

I thought that may be the case. I cannot have a camera set to the car without it showing the footpath that I have to park against.
Just let whoever it is get away with it is not fair at all.

Not at all. Maybe worth reporting to local police who may install cameras themselves- this was done in our town as there was a spate of legally parked cars vandalised over a period of time.

My ring doorbell covers my car on my drive. It also shows my neighbours car on their drive, the house opposite and the pavement. can adjust the frame in and out. If you leave it wide, it goes off a lot more and drains batter quicker. But no biggie if this is desired!

It only picks up when people walk from the left. The right is out of shot to start the camera in time.

My neighbours bell covers his car, my car, the same opposite neighbour and their neighbour.

I pay the fee for the video footage. Not for crime reasons, but so I can see my kids come and go. If there was a crime, I'm sure the police would happily accept footage from mine and my neighbours bell.

can i ask, what was the outcome - did you eventually install a ring doorbell, and did you do any further checks before doing so.
(thanks)

There was some erroneous information above.

You can install private CCTV that covers more than your property. You must not infringe on other people’s privacy.
But you can have CCTV that covers the public footpath etc

If it covers more than your property then you must make provisions for data privacy. Show a clear sign that CCTV is in use and act if individuals require their personal details to be removed

ico.org.uk/your-data-matters/domestic-cctv-systems-guidance-for-people-being-filmed/

Don’t keep recordings for longer than required (eg leave it recording on a loop, and if it saves to a computer or the web then delete after a period of time)
