Hemnes Day Bed

I know every second mumsnetter has one of these so just looking for a spot of advice. Son has asked for one for his room. You can buy with or without the mattresses. He currently has bunk beds so already has 2 mattresses. What are the mattresses you buy with it like? Are they thick enough if the bed is folded out to be comfy? If you have normal mattresses on when it’s folded does it feel like a Princess and the pea type situation? How even does the sheet situation work?

HELP ME pleeeease. I’ve spent hours looking at the IKEA website and I’m non the wiser.

The mattresses that they recommend are very thin, so we bought two normal thickness single mattresses. But that makes the bed too high to be used as a sofa (if that's what your DS wants). Fortunately the room that we used it in was fairly big, so we just pulled the Hemnes away from the wall slightly and stored the second mattress on its side behind the back of the Hemnes.

Hmm that’s a good idea. His bedroom is reasonably sized. Does it poke up the back or can you only see it side on?

The back of the Hemnes is taller than a single mattress is wide so we couldn't see the mattress at all unless you were standing at the bottom of the bed, but you could tell that the bed wasn't flush against the wall.

That’s good to know thanks, wondering if I could get DH to fashion some kind of shelf affair across the gap between the bed and the wall to make use of the gap and create a mattress storage area 🤔

I had a Hemnes bed back when I lived at my parents' house with 2 of Ikea's foam mattresses stacked when it was set up as a single. I found it quick comfortable even when extended- I wouldn't want to sleep on that every night but it's good enough even for a few days. I used a double sheet even when it was set up like a single.

One thing to watch out for if you are using existing mattresses- I remember it having a narrower mattress compared to a normal single. From google, it says 80x200. I'm in the US now and that would be a small twin, rather than a twin size bed.

I bought the mattresses but wish I hadn't. It's more that the bed as a single is 10cm narrower than normal. My dd loves the style of the bed but find the width uncomfortable.
I've put one of the IKEA mattresses under a normal memory foam.siblhe mattress and the other IKEA one behind the bed. If we ever have guest I therefore have the IKEA mattresses to make the double.bed.. but for day to day, she is comfortable.
The drawers under it are great. Style is great.

But honestly, I wouldn't buy one again. But dd is likely ASD and the style of the bed hasn't worked for her. Having the wooden high edge hasn't been comfortable. She is so torn as lots of her friends have the same bed!

Lord I best go and measure his current mattresses then. One of them is deffo an IKEA one but it’s bound to be a different size 🙄🙄

@user1471530109 my Mam has one and he’s slept in it a lot but never as a single, always pulled out as that’s how they have it made up the whole time so they just have two proper mattresses on them. He actively wants the three enclosed sides for a sofa type feel but he’s never slept in it as a single so good thing to be aware of.

We have one and it’s comfy when single but when extended isn’t as good. The drawers are excellent tbf. I use a double sheet folded around the mattress and the duvet folded in two on top. It’s only used as a guest bed or when one of us is unwell.

Savoretti · 26/02/2021 23:11

My DD has one with two IKEA mattresses and it’s really comfy, better than my (very expensive) bed. I’ve also slept on it as a double so only one mattress and also found it comfy like that. We bought the most expensive ones.

Directionerforever · 26/02/2021 23:15

@Savoretti do you know which ones they were? Are they very deep making it very high when both on top of each other?

We have one, I got the more expensive ikea mattresses and it is really comfy as a double. As a single it is high with the mattresses stacked, and they can slip a bit, we tuck the spare mattress behind the bed and it's out of the way.

We have a Hemnes and a Brimnes daybed, both years old. Currently our DC (14 & 10) have them as proper beds but they have been variously used as a playroom sofa and a guest bed. We recently redecorated DCs bedrooms and upgraded from the old foam to the new sprung mattresses. They are specially made for the daybed so they are not too high and you can stack two. They are called Husvika. They are ££ more than I wanted to spend, seeing as I was buying four, and in store I thought they looked v flimsy, especially around the edges, but they are actually v comfortable and DCs love them. May be worth mentioning that when the bed is fully pulled out it is kingsize so make sure you have the right size bedding!

Does anyone else have other mattress recommendations or suggestions or hacks?

We have 5 kids, all have hemnes beds. The youngest 4 all have them permanently as singles because they want the floor space, my eldest (nearly 15) likes the space in bed more so has it permanently pulled out. It's important to remember that when pulled out it isn't a double- it's a king size- and even then some sheets are tight. So if you have thicker mattresses that would be even more of an issue.

On the singles we find that having fairly sturdy mattress protectors on then hold them together well enough to stop them slipping. On the full size one, my dd rearranges her pillows every day to make one corner more like an armchair and loves it, none of the younger ones really do that yet.

WisestIsShe · 28/02/2021 10:05

Dd has one. She had a good single mattress already and we thought the IKEA ones felt v thin so we didn't buy them. As pp have said a single mattress is too wide. It fits on because the underneath but slides it slides to accommodate it but it means the slats aren't supported in the way it was designed to be and so they often come off when changing the bedding. This is very annoying.
Our local mattress/bed shop makes mattresses to order and that's what we're going to do after the lockdown.

WeatherwaxOn · 28/02/2021 10:09

We have one but bought frame and mattresses separately. It's only ever used as a bed, and a regular single sheet fits when both mattresses are stacked.
When pulled out it is wider than our king-size so I use flat sheets.
Might be that we bought bigger mattresses than the standard.
It's very comfortable single or king

Thanks all, I went for the Husvika mattresses. Hopefully they do the job!
