How do I get my bin on to the main road?

A bit of a mundane topic Grin
I've moved house and I'm living in a back to back terraced house, sort of an under dwelling. Tomorrow is bin day and my grey bin is full of the last Tennants crap and it weighs a ton. The problems is I need to somehow get it up approx 20 low steps (about half the height of a normal step) to get it to the main road as I dont suppose the bin men will collect it from the back.
I cannot get it up the steps at all, obvs its top late to knock on a neighbours door (who I am yet to meet) to ask for help and the rubbish bags have all split and it's pretty grim in there, so I dont really fancy trying to take some rubbish out before hauling the bin up.

Any magical solutions from wiser mumsnetters before I don my marigolds and a mask and have to get stuck in Envy
Plus I dont really fancy having this issue every fortnight.. how do people get round it?

This is fascinating can you post a picture of a similar house.

DisappearingGirl · 26/02/2021 17:46

It sounds a bit like where I live OP! Very hilly and lots of higgledly terraces! I think if I were you I would just keep it on the street. Yes it would cause problems if everyone did this, but presumably not everyone has to lug their bin up a massive load of steps.

Hopefully where you live is also like where I live in that most of the neighbours are pretty chilled out and would not start policing your bin location :)

Covidcorvid · 26/02/2021 17:52

Can you keep it in the alleyway normally....you might have to empty it but by bit this week.

FanSpamTastic · 26/02/2021 17:58

I used to live in a house like this in Yorkshire. I think under dwelling is a good description. Our back upstairs room was below street level on the road side - we looked out over the river on the front. Our kitchen downstairs had no windows as it was built into the side of the hill. If you looked at the house from the river side it looked like it had 5 floors - top 3 belonged to the upstairs house and the bottom 2 to our house. From the road side you could only see the top 3 floors.

We had a sloping path from the side of the house that went up to a parking area to the side of the house. So no steps to contend with. Going forward - if you can - I'd leave the bin up at street level and just take your rubbish bags up to your bin.

I can't visualise this at all

Please can someone post a photo Grin

Yes, please do! I can't picture it and I would love to see it.

Is it like this?

Or more like this?

I looked it up, apparently they are also known as double decker houses, or over-under houses, and Hebden Bridge is heaving with them.

Here’s one

Ours was a flying freehold rather than an under over. Only one house on each side but in another mill town less steep than little Switzerland Hebden Bridge.

Justforphoto · 26/02/2021 22:33

@Covidcorvid your 2nd diagram is like the ones near me. I don't think anyone would be surprised to learn that I don't live a million miles from Hebden Bridge

idontlikealdi · 26/02/2021 22:38

I'm totally intrigued now and can't see the right move link. Sk your landlord what on Earth youre meant to do?!

Handsnotwands · 26/02/2021 22:42

We’re going to need a diagram. I’m intrigued

Handsnotwands · 26/02/2021 22:44

Wow the owner of that Rightmove house really loves camping 😂

ChangedName4TheSakeOfIt · 26/02/2021 22:49

My neighbour and I both keep our bins off our property on the bit of common grass (actually owned by our HA) beside our houses because of this reason. We can't haul them up the steps from the back of the houses. Is there a spot like that you could use for next time? Of course ours is the type of area where bins don't get nicked and I'm okay with people popping their litter in as they pass because we create little waste, even for a family of 5. Do you have a similarly suitable option at all?

Gigantasaurous · 26/02/2021 22:57

I wouldn't know how to try draw it Grin the right move link is pretty similar though. Basically it's like a back to back terraced house, but the front terrace is 2 storeys on the road side, my side is 4 storeys because its built into a steep hill, but I only have the bottom two floors, the two above me are part of the front terrace... clearly it's a local thing as I am also not a million miles from hebden bridge Grin

Back to the bin situation.... I could leave it on the main road side I guess, but it doesn't appear that it's the done thing and I'm not keen to upset anyone when I've only just moved here. No common land or anything like that to leave the bin there. I'm thinking I may just buy another bin and heavy duty bin bags so I can take my bin up half full and then take the extra bags up separate. Never occurred to me this might pose some logistical problems before I moved Hmm

This is fascinating. I can't sleep a wink for some reason and I'm sure googling underdwellings and Hebden bridge isn't helping.

alexdgr8 · 27/02/2021 04:02

that sounds claustrophobic, making me slightly stressed just imagining it. and i thought a basement was impossible to live in !

anyway OP, i think the right thing to do is to contact your local council, waste management, and ask for advice.
you do not want to be reported for causing an obstruction or some other infringement. good luck.

CallforHecate · 27/02/2021 08:43

Can you knock on some other neighbours and ask them? I appreciate the one you mentioned has language problems but there must be other neighbours you could ask surely.

minniemoocher · 27/02/2021 08:47

If it's just you, your bin weight shouldn't be an issue now the last tenants stuff has gone - we only have 2 bags a fortnight for 3 adults

minniemoocher · 27/02/2021 08:49

I get the layout now, our house in the USA was like that except we had all of it, bungalow at front, two storey at back. Some of the properties were divided like the ops, hilly city

ScoobyBlues · 27/02/2021 08:56

I'm fascinated too. This lady has a beautiful underdwelling. It doesn't say what she does with her bins though!
