Really big lump in breast

I have a really big lump in my breast. It seems bigger and more defined this week which is panicking me. I have been to my GP who has referred me to the breast clinic over a month ago. She said it was non urgent because of my age (under 30) and it was more to put my mind at rest. I just wanted to tell someone that I'm scared. It seems silly to say it in real life especially as my GP who is excellent was so unconcerned. But the lump just feels huge. (At least 3 cm length ways and across).

Don't be scared, I found a few lumps a couple of months back. Breast clinic were great very through, diagnosed fat necrosis, nothing to worry about.
Hope your appointment comes through soon. X

Hi. I found a large lump also and went to the GP and had tests etc and it turned out to be a cyst! I'm 27 😊

Lumene · 25/02/2021 15:32

Sorry to hear that OP. Can you ring the GP and explain the update and ask about the appointment status?

I am on my period this week so hoping increase in size could be due to that? If it doesn't go down I will contact GP again

Is it smooth? If it’s smooth it is much less likely to be cancer. Cancer feels like a piece of gravel amongst pebbles.

If it is smooth and easily movable it is more likely to be a cyst or a fibroadenoma.

However, your age doesn’t make it any less urgent. You should have been referred under the 2ww process.

I have had 3 urgent referrals for clearly defined lumps and 1 normal priority because my GP felt it was breast tissue. On examination at the clinic it was a very small cyst that could only be felt in one position.

Best of luck xx

I have had several cysts in my breasts, and had a few scans and checks over the years, but always cysts. They do come and go, and also get bigger around my period, I assume as the breasts get bigger, it pushes the cyst out. Now, I am very aware of where they are, and am less anxious, when they pop up.

My DM did have breast cancer in her 70's, and her lump was tiny, like a pea, and really hard, so it can vary immensely.

TheVeryHungryTortoise · 25/02/2021 15:36

OP ring the GP surgery to update them, they may up the referral to 2ww. Yes, your age reduces the likelihood of this being a tumour, but it doesn't rule it out. I work in healthcare and we see many young women with breast lumps most are benign, but some are cancerous so it is very important to report these new changes and get checked out again.

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 25/02/2021 15:39

I had a hard smooth lump in my breast when I was 28. It was fairly moveable and my GP said it was a fibroadenoma or "breast mouse". Breast mouse because it moved!
I had a biopsy done and yes, it was a fibroadenoma. Quite surprisingly after a year it disappeared on its own!
Ring the GP and ask them where your appointment is.

Its hard to explain what it feels like. Almost a bit rope like if that makes sense? Not gravelly though

I have generally lumpy/ bumpy breast tissue and always have done which makes it harder to tell what things "should" feel like. Although this lump is new.

Don’t worry, I have bumpy breast tissue and noticed a lump and went to the breast clinic, by the appointment time I couldn’t feel it hardly. They checked and found 7 cysts - I had only felt one of them because of the bumpyness. I’ve been back a couple of times when I’ve noticed changes, when it is my period they swell up.
The breast clinic isn’t bad either, they are really friendly! I had them felt and drawn round, then an ultrasound and the second time a biopsy (looked terrifying but didn’t actually feel at all and I’m scared of needles)
They tell you on the day too which makes it easier.

Cactus1982 · 25/02/2021 16:16

I also have a fibroadenoma. It’s moveable and become more noticeable and feels tender at various point over the month, so obviously hormonal.

When I went to the breast clinic to have it checked out, there were four other women in the waiting room with me, of mixed ages, and we were all told there and then we had benign lumps (they can tell straight away from the scans).

BearSoFair · 25/02/2021 16:37

I have a fibroadenoma too, the exact size of a teaspoon (I put one over it once to compare!)
Was referred to the breast clinic and it wasn't anywhere near as stressful as I was imagining, I didn't even need a biopsy, they could just tell from scans and examination.
Like PP it changes during my cycle, the only time I'm really aware of it these days is a few days before a period when it gets very tender.

User1511 · 25/02/2021 16:42

It sounds like a fibroadenoma. It will feel bigger than it is due to tissue on and around it so in realists is probably more like 1.5-2cm.

Bobbletwist · 25/02/2021 17:24

Does anyone else else have a fibroadenoma that feels like rope/ is hard? Hoping that's what it is. Will see if I can chase GP for news on appointment.

Footle · 25/02/2021 17:35

No one here can tell you what it is on the basis of what theirs were.

Bobbletwist · 25/02/2021 18:30

I know I'm just trying to work out what they typically feel like. I have still already been to my GP and will still chase my clinic referral

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 25/02/2021 18:50

I had a lump that turned out to be a massive fucking boil 🤮

User1511 · 25/02/2021 19:49

My fibroadenoma was quite hard. The breast doctor said it felt like a cyst because of its firmness.

Normal breast tissue feels ropey. It could be that you have a lot of normal tissue over the top of it giving it that feeling.

Mistymountain · 25/02/2021 21:32

I had a lump that felt like a long rope and was referred under 2 week rule. It was Mondors disease - a shallow vein thrombosis, it went on its own eventually. It's still worth contacting GP as yours has changed.

Fawn68 · 03/03/2021 10:34

It's very worrying, I have just found a small breast lump under my breast. It's maybe the size of a small pea and moves! I am going to call my doctor today the worrying has me sick.
