Renting with cats

purpleme12 · 24/02/2021 20:27

I've already got 2 cats
I might be forced to move in the near future
I'm very worried
What do I do?? If I can't find anywhere do I lie and say I'll not bring the cats and then just bring them anyway??

Is it a house with garden you'll be looking to move to or a flat? Are they indoor cats?

purpleme12 · 24/02/2021 21:07

Yes it is a house with a garden however I'm worried that might not be possible and worried we'd have to move to a flat which would be awful as well cos my child spends so much time outside free play it's where she's happy.
They are indoors

I rent a house where I'm happy to have pets - although from the tone of surprise in the agent's voice when I said that, I think it's unusual.

We got our two cats when renting - we weren't supposed to have them, but they never inspected the house, and the landlord wasn't doing any maintenance (even of a leaking shower and toilet which was likely causing real damage to the bathroom floor), so I didn't feel bad about it, plus it was an unfurnished rental so there wasn't really anything they could destroy anyhow. But it was a risk to do that.

I honestly just wouldn't say anything.

In our last rental, they never came to inspect once.

purpleme12 · 24/02/2021 21:17

The first flat I lived in with my ex they didn't inspect.
However the 2 houses I've lived in since (for years) have been inspected without fail

I can't stop crying

Try asking.... our letting agent put no pets in the ads, but I hadn’t said that and if someone had asked I can’t imagine I’d say no tbh.

purpleme12 · 24/02/2021 21:29

Ok I will ask

I've rang two in preparation already, one said no. The other one had automated questions on the phone before you were put through and if you answered yes to pets or a student you weren't put through!

Those people who didn't have inspections, were you renting through letting agent or landlord?

I've always offered to pay a bigger deposit to cover any potential damage (which has thankfully never happened)

AllMyPrettyOnes · 24/02/2021 21:32

Our landlord used letting agents at the beginning, but then dropped them. So we just through the landlord.
AllMyPrettyOnes · 24/02/2021 21:32

Sorry - so just through the landlord**

purpleme12 · 24/02/2021 21:34

I guess that's why

Unfortunately I've found it very rare for them to chip in with their share of the rent, paw-lodgers I believe there called. I've heard they often try to pay with dead mice but as this isn't legal tender it doesn't actually help.

Thank you this is lovely ❤️

Most people I know have just not said and then hid things during an inspection.

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/02/2021 21:45

We always found somewhere but it was a major incentive to buy a house when we did.

purpleme12 · 24/02/2021 21:47

Yes I am looking into how much I could potentially get on a mortgage
However I work part time and don't earn a lot
And don't have high hopes of it either

I don't think I can cope

Thing is, if you lie and they find out they can evict you for breach of contract. All it takes is your cats shitting in a neighbours garden and them having a moan to the landlord.

Weedsnseeds1 · 24/02/2021 21:50

I had to rent between selling one house and buying another, with a cat. I didn't have a vast choice of rental properties, but there were a few options, so don't give up hope.

purpleme12 · 24/02/2021 21:52

How did you find a property? Did you register with all the letting agents? And just keep asking about properties?

OP posts:
Beamur · 24/02/2021 21:52

Some landlords will accept pets. Maybe try some private landlords as well as agents.

purpleme12 · 24/02/2021 21:55

I'm not sure where to find private landlords, that's the thing
I'm having trouble finding any

thegcatsmother · 24/02/2021 21:58

I rented out my house when we were abroad for 13 years, and cats were always allowed as I had had cats. I was renting abroad, and for part of that time, we had cats (still have), and it was permitted there.

thegcatsmother · 24/02/2021 21:59

Just ask the letting agent if the l/l would consider cats. You never know. My place was always advertised as cat friendly.
