Feeling lost and sad - redundancy

I was made redundant two months into a new job. The company is doing well financially despite covid. A restructure was planned for a while and its a shame they hired me when they did. I had asked HR whether redundancies were a possibility. I was reassured that the team I was joining actually needed more staff, not less! So you can imagine my surprise when I was made redundant! I’m in the role for a few more weeks then I’ll be leaving. One months pay to soften the blow.

I’ve been handling it pretty well so far and searching for new roles. But right now I feel like shit. I hate the work and team anyway so I’m not losing on that front. It just sucks to be made redundant during this tricky time! I have a mortgage to pay! No partner, I am on my own. Thankfully no children.

I’ve had no training on the job, nobody asks how I am, and I’ve never had regular catch ups with my manager. Other jobs have become available within the company but none are suitable for me.

I just feel so lost and hopeless. There are hardly any jobs to apply to. I am based in a medium sized city, so not an awful lot happening.

Hoping for some kind and reassuring messages Flowers

I understand how you are feeling, I was made redundant last march as lockdown started.
I felt totally useless after and like you had not even been with company a year so no redundancy pay out.

Just remember its not you, you haven't done anything wrong and something will turn up.

I luckily found a new job and have been back in full time work since June.

You will find something and its a good opportunity to apply for jobs you may not have applied for.

Wishing you all the best!

I'm sorry, that sounds tough.

I think redundancy has a way of really knocking you for six - the uncertainty and loss of control but it also feels a bit of a personal rejection even though I don't think it is most of the time.

Timing obviously even less ideal than usual but the emotions that come with redundancy are probably responsible for how hopeless it feels, rather than because it genuinely is hopeless.

Do you have any contacts in your industry who might know of any openings? What are your commuting options?

That's a rubbish thing to have to go through @Sadrightnow. As you say, at least it's not a job you love.

Are there agencies to sign up to so that you might get something once you've collected your redundancy pay?

Try to stay positive, you got this job, you can get another xxx

So sorry to hear this has got you down Flowers I really think we're going to see an employment boom once things have settled, and I think it's very unlikely that someone who got hired in a pandemic would then struggle find something once firms are confidently hiring again. I really hope you find something soon. Remember you'll look back at this as a temporary low point. Jobs pop up unexpectedly - you'll be fine. And at least it wasn't a job you loved!
