What are your 8/9 year old boys reading?

DS aged 8 is a big Harry Potter fan. His dad reads the books to him before bed.
He then reads for a while on his own before going to sleep. I would like to keep this going so I'm going to try and order him a couple of new books online seeing as all of the libraries are closed!

He's just finished the Ickabog and before that Fantastic beasts/Beedle the Bard.
I think we've exhausted JK Rowling!

Any recommendations along similar lines?
He's read bits of David Walliams and didn't seem to mind them but didn't seem particularly enthused! What are your 8/9 year olds reading?

Artemis Fowl, Terry Pratchett (Wee Free Men is what we’re currently reading him, he’s read himself Truckers and Diggers), they’ve been reading Michael Morpogo at school (Y3).

TankGirl97 · 23/02/2021 20:24

All the How To Train Your Dragon books are popular here.

ghislaine · 23/02/2021 20:24

My sons have different tastes in that they live Walliams, Tom Gates, Captain Underpants et al but I would suggest:

Narnia series
Lemony Snicket books
The Bagthorpes Saga (starts with Ordinary Jack)
The Jungle Book/Just So and Other Stories
Just William series.

Well, mine is reading Humphrey the Hamster but he is a sensitive soul Grin.

Elder DS loved Artemis Fowl at that age.

The Land of Roar and Return to Roar

Secret Seven

Hardy Boys

The storey treehouse series

How to train your dragon series

NotWithMyShoes · 23/02/2021 20:30

DD is the same. She's just discovered the Simon Thorn series and loves them. How to train your Dragon. DH read her the Lord of the Rings.

ElphabaTheGreen · 23/02/2021 20:33

DS1 (8) is up to book 6 in the How to Train Your Dragon series. He also enjoyed Goodnight Mister Tom, Wonder and a classic Australian kids’ book called Two Weeks With the Queen by Morris Gleitzman. He also loves the Enid Blyton ‘Adventure’ series (Mountain of Adventure, Castle of Adventure - all very Famous Five-y), Ottoline and the Yellow Cat and Secrets of the Sun King. Non-fiction-wise, he’s devouring Kay’s Anatomy by Adam Kay. Hilarious and he’s learning loads.

He read all the Harry Potters back to back during the first lockdown and turned into a proper Potter-head. I refused to buy him any Harry Potter themed stuff or let him watch any of the movies until the books were read. That did the trick Grin He’s been a voracious reader of anything long-form ever since.

Mostly Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Tom Gates and Minecraft. The most popular one at the moment is the Treehouse series.

SarBear1980 · 23/02/2021 20:36

Similar tastes and just loved Land of Roar, Narnia series, Midnight Guardians. Might like Holes (often read in Year 5/6), Blitzcat and Machine Gunners (if into WW2). This is a great resource for ideas of books for different ages:

Beetle Boy series and a some other MG Leonard books went down very well. Just finished The Explorers by Katherine Rundell. It was excellent.

Shosha1 · 23/02/2021 20:51

Nowhere Emporium Series by Ross MacKenzie. His Shadowsmith and Evernight are good too. Magical and slightly dark. Set in Scotland.

Rooftoppers although cant remember who it was by.

All of them were loved by my 9 year old

GeorgiaGirl52 · 23/02/2021 20:54

Percy Jackson series
Geronimo Stilton series
The Magic Treehouse series

BoogleMcGroogle · 23/02/2021 20:58

cheeseismydownfall mine’s reading Humphrey the Hamster too and he’s not at all sensitive. He likes me to read it before bed. He’s also quite partial to Guinea Pigs Online ( bit don’t tell his mates!).

Apart from that, he loves Dogman at the moment and is working his way through the Goosebumps books. They are pretty retro now, but if you have a child who likes a bit of (age-appropriate) spookiness, they are great fun.

He also loves The Beano. Has a weeekly delivery and my dad got 200 old comics on eBay and he’s devouring them.

HamCob · 23/02/2021 21:00

Wow! So many brilliant suggestions - thank you!
I remember reading Goodnight Mister Tom/Narnia series at a similar age.
They are reading land of roar online at school, although we've missed big chunks so I will have a look at that too and also some of the other suggestions. Lots to be getting on with Smile
