Pain after mirena coil- what is normal?

I had a mirena coil fitted last month to hopefully help with irregular bleeding. It’s been in for about 7 weeks. I found the insertion very painful. Since then I haven’t had a day pain free. It’s not an agonising or alarming pain, just a dull ache in my stomach constantly. I have been bleeding for the past 14 days but it doesn’t feel like period pain, it’s really centre in my stomach and central. Sometimes I get a sharp pain that takes my breath away but it’s over in seconds.

Some days are worse than others, for example today I have had to take paracetamol and I have mild back ache as well. I’m not even sure if it’s related but it just seems too much of a coincidence.

Has anyone had this, is it normal or is it something I should be worried about?

Thanks

Hi OP

I'm on my second Mirena now. I originally had it fitted to deal with my exceptionally heavy periods and not for contraception (I was sterilised after an accident because I wouldn't be able to carry a pregnancy beyond 16 weeks).

I left the first one for much longer than the recommended 5 years; I doubt there was any hormones left in it. My new Mirena is bringing back the memories from when I had the first one fitted.

I got normal' period-type cramps for a day or two before my period, then three days of very light bleeding. The cramps are at their peak on day 3.

My periods stopped completely after 6 months on my first Mirena and the cramps stopped too...in fact I forgot I had it in. I'm hoping the same thing happens with this one!

The week after I had this one firted, my cat decided to leap from the windowsill onto my bed. She landed will full force onto my stomach and it HURT. I thought I'd been punctured! Thankfully the pain only lasted a couple of hours.

I've not experienced the same symptoms as you with either one of my Miirena's. I didn't get any side effects from the contraceptive pill either. I kept the leaflet from mine and what you're describing doesn't sound unusual. Sometimes the body detects the presence of a foreign body and tries to reject/get rid of it, hence the cramps. How long it takes for the body to accept the Mirena varies from person to person.

If you're at all worried, please give your GP or practice nurse a call.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.... it really transformed my life for the better (after the first 6 months).
